Super User JustJames Posted January 29, 2019 Super User Posted January 29, 2019 What weight Jig/Texas rig, do you guy use on KAYAK, fishing drop off 25 FOW? Today I went out to Point where I caught bass yesterday, this time with my kayak to really see what under there. Turn out it is a drop off from 5-10 FOW to 25-30 FOW. No wonder yesterday it worked because, I used 3/8 weight jig and hopped up the drop off, today totally different, I hardly felt the bottom with the same jig. Should I up the weight to 1/2oz? BTW manage to caught one bass in the two hours I spent time paddleing around. Quote
Abby Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 I would bump up the weight in that deep of water. 1/2 oz easily and maybe a bit more.. 1 Quote
CroakHunter Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 Either half with with a no action trailer or 3/4 with flapping or swimming trailer 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted January 29, 2019 Super User Posted January 29, 2019 Sounds like you might want to try a C-rig, or an anchor. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted January 29, 2019 Super User Posted January 29, 2019 Soooooo many variables, James....lots of trial and error. Things that will affect.... -wind -current -rate of fall the fish want -will they hit on fall....or do they need it sitting still for a bit? -action of trailer -your patience (mine isn't so good...I have trouble fishing very light weights in deep water...like a ned at 28') Nice thing is when you get a calm day and a drop that you are confident is holding fish....you can take some time and experiment Also consider...fishing from bank and bringing the jig UP the drop vs being on water and coming down or across a drop....can be challenging to fish dow steep drops while maintaining contact and feel 1 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 29, 2019 Author Super User Posted January 29, 2019 Thanks all of you, even I have kayak for awhile but Im still considered myself very new. I know for sure that these 2 drops “diamond point park” hold fish especially spawning time, right? @OCdockskipper, but the problem is I can’t pin point exactly where the drop start and end and if I miss those, I would end up in very thick silt from many years of lake algae treatment. I’m ready to learn more out of Bank fishing this year. I think I have 1/2 jig and I might try these point on float tube today. It is gonna be lot of challenge year for me since I will be fishing techniques that out of my comfort zone. Quote

That must be a newer park (last 30 years) or a newer name for an existing park, I don't remember it. Is it on the main lake or in the no-wake zone? Quote

OCdockskipper Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 I remember that point, yes it is a great prespawn spot. It drops quickly into the creek channel and seems to be a stopping point as fish pull up to the flats on either side. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 30, 2019 Author Super User Posted January 30, 2019 I’m such a newbie, I checked my jig and turn out I grabbed 1/4oz instead of 3/8 jig ?. I planed to take Float tube to same spot but the wind picked up, change of plan I switched to 3/8 oz stand up jig so I can stay in strike zone longer(very painful slow) and went to drop off spot that I can fish from dock. The other drop across is other ppl backyard. Video of yesterday and today that I can confirm, this spot will be good for me to learn how to fish for pre-spawn bass IF I can get there before all the bass boat in Canyon Lake. Quote
