kayak deck padding

I'm finding larger sheets of deck padding are becoming hard to find. Even on ACK, they stop carrying it. You now have to buy precut padding to fit your particular boat. That's all fine and dandy, but if you want to add padding to other areas so it matches, it's hard to find the exact color/pattern (if it applies).

Where are you guys getting your kayak deck mat/padding?

I have looked on amazon, ebay, and some retailers online. But the dimensions are pretty small, and solid colors are hard to find too. Some of the DIY videos on Youtube leave links to the mat they use, but it's all been discontinued.

Any pictures/links to what you have used/purchased?

Unfortunately that's what I've noticed over the past couple years, too.

I say unfortunate, but that's because I don't want to fork out the $$ for

SeaDek for my yak  

 

Hopefully soon I'll be heading down to our local shop to see what they've

got for closed-cell foam, and deck padding. The pre-cut stuff they sold me

before was a tad on the "too small" side of things. Would like more and

piece them together.

which is probably just the reason we don't see the large sheets of deck padding anymore. There's more money to be made with pre-cut.

 

I bet there's a still a good DIY solution out there somewhere, just need to find it.

I'm just wondering how thick you want it? You can get sheets or even 15"x60" rolls of 3/8 Neoprene Rubber from Amazon.

well, I'm looking for something that will withstand sun, wear and tear, and won't need replaced every few months.  A lot of the pads I'm seeing are 5-6mm.

This is 9.5mm thick. One place I worked, we used it as insulation on tanks that the contents were industrial solvents that were heated to 300f and this stuff withstood the effects of the solvent vapors and heat for years. Applies using contact cement and you can layer it to build the thickness up.

I used EVA drawer liner with success. Glued with 3M super 77.

OK, maybe I'm overthinking this.  Maybe not.  Can you school me here?

 

When shopping for kayak deck mat, or boat decking, or something very specific to boats.......What is so different about THAT material, compared to let's say neoprene, EVA drawer liner, etc.  In my mind, you need to have the specialized material so that it will last and be good quality.  

 

Anyone break this down for me?

I've seen those both as well.  The one from ACK has been discontinued.  I spoke to them about the black, and they said they no longer had it in stock.  I didn't check on the gray.

 

As for the Hook 1, I was hoping for a roll of it.  I needed adding that was wider than the 12" they offered.  My issue is with the sizes.  Which is what limits me.  I don't like seams, so I'd rather not piece together.

It's simple if you research the product you want to use.  I have MarineMat on my Hobie Compass.  Here's their product spiel.  Main thing is it resists stains and UV damage, easy to clean, color doesn't fade, and it's a comfortable non slip surface.

 

I bet you could call SeaDek or MarineMat and they'd quote you a price on a roll.  There's even DIY instructions on SeaDek's site:

I found a few links that sell marine EVA foam by the sheet or roll, some offered with the 3M adhesive backing or without. Not sure about pricing but they certainly offer a multitude of colors, textures, and thicknesses.
