Considering updating two new reels for swimbait use.  My two considerations are the Calcutta 400 and the Tranx series.  Prefer to have two swimbait set ups.

I do like the idea of a low profile 400 bait caster as I have 3 old green 5:1 CU200’s.

Is the Calcutta 400 still a popular choice?

Dependebility and line capacity are my two main concerns.

The 300 might be a better choice,  the 400 is a beast.

I have the 300D and the Tranx 300HG ~

 Both GREAT REELS.

The Both hold about the same line capacity where they differre is in gear ratio / IPT.

Callcutta D and the standard Tranx are both 'slower" at 5.7:1 the TranxHG is comsiderable fast at 7.6:.

Fished swimbaits south of the border for a week straight last Oct using the 300D & the Tranx 300HG.

I like the 300D a little more as it's easier to keep the bait low & slow because of the IPT.

However the Tranx was clearly much better at helping me 'catchup to' beasts coming at me.

Can't go wrong with either one.

As said above, can't go wrong with either one.  Sounds like you prefer the low profile vs round style, if so get the Tranx. :thumbsup3:

Be careful with the Tranx, some of the models have the single paddle handles, I don't like those...

I have four Calcutta 400D's for my big bait applications.

HG has the power handle, PG has the double paddle if i remember right. Seems thats the opposite of what most people want, occasionally you'll find people wanting to trade.

Tried the power handle that came on the 300HG - didn't care for it.

Bought a double paddle.

Better.

I may consider buying one of each (Calcutta 400b and a Tranx 400)

That´s the spirit!!!
