I'm thinking about it because my favorite online tackle shops don't have the length I want in a rod I'm looking at. Amazon of course does because they have everything. But a tackle shop knows how to treat, store, and package a rod. I'm a little weary of ordering one from Amazon because I highly doubt they take special care of how their rods are stored. As far as packaging, do they package them correctly? Do they arrive in tip top shape?

ordered 3 Dobyns fury rods and  3 Kastking speed demon pro rods from Amazon.

never had a broken rod . they ship the rods in heavy cardboard tubes.

I received 1 with a broken tube, but the post office damaged it, after trying to deliver to the wrong address 3 times.. Luckily the rod was still unharmed.

I’ve ordered reels but never Rods from Amazon; and I’ve never had a problem. Keep in mind though, not everything sold on Amazon is fulfilled and shipped by them.

The other online retailers I have bought rods from are :

1) North 40 Outfitters (Good Prices, Very Well Packaged in the sturdiest rod tubes I’ve ever seen)

2) Academy Sports (Good Prices, Ships in Rod tubes but takes forever to ship up north)

3) Pure Fishing (Retail Prices, guaranteed waranty, ships properly in sturdy rod tube)

4) Dicks Sports (Good Prices when they run online coupons , very good customer service but terrible Rod shipping methods. Rods are shipped in two 4ft rectangle boxes that are taped together. On two occasions they shipped rods to me and they arrived with the rod tips poking out of the side of the cardboard boxes)

5) American Legacy Fishing (excellent service and very good prices , Rods are shipped properly in reinforced tubes)

6) EBay (roll of the dice and completely dependent on the vendor)

Do you realize Amazon isn't an actual retailer for a majority of their items? They are a large storefront for others to sell items on. That's why you can get a Curado for $179-$199. There are a ton of items that vary in price. I'm gonna guess that whoever sends you the rod will have it shipped correctly though.

Both of the Diawa Aird-X rods I ordered through Amazon came in thick-walled cardboard tubes from the actual seller. I'll definitely order from Amazon again the next time I need a new rod - the prices are better in most cases.

Purchased a number of them. All from their distribution center, which means they are shipped in the thick tubes and done right.

Havent has any issues yet.

I've had the same thing happen with Dick's. One end of the box was open. I was surprised the rod even made it here. They also sent me the wrong model of rod. I returned it to my local store. I have ordered reels, baits and terminal tackle from Dick's without any problems, but I will never order a rod from them again.

No problems here.  They actually sent me 5 by accident instead of 1 on an order last year.  I ordered a 9'6" Okuma SST drift rod and they sent me 5 instead of one.  I contacted them and they told me to keep them, so I gave the others to friends of mine.

Better man than I am. One of the first trillion dollar companies in the world who still pays their employees peanuts wouldn't get a peep out of me.

I’ve purchased three rods through Amazon. Only had an issue with one (broken tip), and I just returned it (for free) and bought a new one. Just be sure anything you buy has free returns, and you don’t have to worry about how they package it. Just send it back if it has issues.

I'd feel guilty if I didn't try to contact them.  All good though, my friends all have nice steelhead rods now :)

I ordered a 2pc rod and it came in a rectangular Amazon box no stronger than regular carbord box.  Beware.

@GlaucusSame here and it had one piece of paper on it, I was shocked. That one said "fulfilled by Amazon" I ordered couple of other rods and one said fulfilled by Abu Garcia another was from a Tackle store and both came in cardboard shipping tubes. Even then one tube had been broken by UPS. So I'd steer clear if it says "fulfilled by Amazon for seller" unless you don't mind sending it back (which is easy with them). I've gotten several rods over the years from various companies in shipping tubes and I bet 25-30% still get broke or at least tube has damage unfortunately. Dicks Sporting Goods sent me 2 rods in a regular box and no packing just loose, they made it ok but I'd never do that again?

Yes I ordered an Okuma Ultralight Trout rod. Was free shipping and a decent price. Arrived without any issues.

Just remember FedX, UPS, and USPS all have box crushers. I ordered a rod from TW and the tube it was packed in was similar to the tubes found in the rolls of carpet, I don't think the big three shippers could damage it.

All my Kastking Rods were ordered from Amazon. They come directly from Kastking in Garden City NY

Kastking rod shipping is rock solid. Cardboard tube with foam inserts to protect butt and tip. That tube is then placed inside a rectangular cardboard box with paper inserted to keep the tube from shifting inside the box.

Go for it, just use Pay Pal as an extra layer of protection.

FWIW, Walmart sells many of the same products as Amazon thru their site with free shipping to the store. If it's broken or wrong, just return it right away.

I ordered a two-piece 7' rod from them last month, and it came in a 5' heavy duty tube. Excellent packaging. Maybe they got the message, or maybe I just got lucky.

The main problem with ordering from Amazon to me is that so many people are doing it. They've already put a boatload of local dealers out of business. They don't even have to offer lower prices now, people order from them just for the convenience. The day will come when you can't go somewhere local and put your hands on a rod to check it out before buying it. I'm guilty of buying from them, but I try to keep it to a minimum.
