Favorite spinning rod I have St Croix Avid 8' ML Moderate  I throw 3/8oz rocket shad spinnerbaits, 1.5 squarebills, senkos, on occasion 1/2 oz inline spinners and down to ned rigs and 2" paddle tails. The rod as a fair amount of flex/give. If you can hold one check it out.

I also have a 7'6" M/F ST Croix Legend Elite spinning rod. Too much power and no give so be wary of M/F ratings they arent all the same. Good for senkos too.

 

But the Avid hit the mark for me.

Decided not to spin myself into the ground and not to run all over half the dang state only come up short with whatever a shop has in stock.

 

A local guy that has gotten me in most of my St. Croix Rods over the years, I’m going have him get me in the St. Croix EyeCon #ECS70MM and the Abu Garcia Veritas #VTSSW70-5 “Winch Spin”. I believe I can make one of these work. Spec wise they are very very close. Both being 7 foot, one will have a cork handle one will be EVA foam, 1 pc., same lure wt., my line wt. will fall in perfect, both made with decent components. 

 

I feel good about how SC rates action of their rods from my experience with them. Even though I have not touched this one. I have handled a couple of the Abu “Winch” casting rods that were medium with moderate action and I liked the softness of those tips. If the spinning version is close I think I’ll be satisfied. I’ll order them Saturday. I pretty sure I’ll like one of these. If I like they both maybe I’ll take both. 

 

I realized I didn’t want to make too big of a project over this. I’ll use this pretty hard with a couple of crankbait styles that I intend to throw on it. My reel ratio is on the slower side. 5.2 : 1, with a slower tip rod should equate to some better hook up with KVD 1.0 & 1.5 squarebills

Don't make assumptions with spinning reels.  My 6.0:1 CI4 takes up 34 IPT, which is similar to a 7.3:1 reel.

Exactly, my Trion-30 (5.3:1) takes up 25.9 IPT which fairly compares to a Fuego CT-H (6.3:1) which takes up 26.3 IPT.

 

Spinning reels ARE lower gear ratio mainly because the spool is larger diameter. Can't directly compare gear ratios between spinning and casting reels.

I’m not sure of my line recovery. I’ll have to look it up. It’s a 2500 series reel I’ll be putting on this. 

 

Long story very short. I made my new home fishing a local lake over the last two years because of the effects of rains hurting the river. It’s been fun making the transition from smallies to greenies. 

 

I’m looking back and some hookups I had a fish that I had lost. And I strongly believe if I were using a softer tip with the cranks I was using I would have lipped a few of those fish. 

 

I have a boat full of fast and extra-fast spinning rods, for lighter cranks I need to try something slower. I have myself covered pretty well with casting rods that sport a more moderate action.

Agreed...I have a 2500Ci4+ that is mighty quick.  As are my favorite class of reels to fish...the older (pre-LT) Daiwa 3000/3012 size in the Luvias.  They have a 5.6:1 gear ratio but take in almost 38" of line per turn.  Plus, the larger spool helps with line lay and I feel slightly smoother drags (maybe to the slightly larger surface area?).

I’m putting on an older Stradic 2500FH. I’ve done brgs., shaft, spool support, shaft and main gear over the years. You can’t kill that reel. But I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have that higher ratio of today. 5.2 or 5.4 to 1 almost positive if I were betting the house. I’ll check box and owner manual.

I LOVE the pair of Falcon Bucco 7'0 "Crankin Spin" model rods! Bought them at Walmart on clearance about 3-4 yrs ago. Nice power, and a moderate action.

Also have a couple older Falcon spinning rods that work great for small cranks, jerkbaits. Falcon Lowrider LFS-2-169, and a LFS-1-17.

I use Pflueger Patriarch XT spinning reels, in size 35.

Really? I feel like more often then not a spinning rod is medium action.

It’s a saltwater rod but look into the Tsunami Slim Wave rods. A couple of my kayak buddies own them for inshore fishing, but they’re too moderate in action for my liking.

+1  I use 7ft ML eyecons for neg rigs and drop shots for bass.  Also I do think that the premier medium fast has a pretty soft tip compared to some of the other lines.

Was able to get the feel of a few rods in a moderate action. After being anal and pondering over them I just went with the best overall feel and balance. Didn’t let price interfere because for the most part they were not all that expensive. Specs were basically the same on all rods. 

 

Went with the Abu Garcia Veritas #VTSSW7015, 7 ft., 1pc., 1/4-5/8 oz., 8-17 lb.

 

Really didn’t take long to ponder over. Picked up the SC EyeCon first. Nothing to really not like. Really thought it was coming home. Picked up the Veritas felt slightly better to me at the grip. Felt a bit softer at the tip. Put my reel on it, felt like a winner and out the door I went.

This thread question was about MM spinning rods.

Most “Walleye” rods are moderate action compared to “Bass” rods.

The Loomis PR844S salt water Popping rod is an excellent small to medium size crank bait rod. You can find these used in new condition at bargain price because anglers think it’s a fast action but it parabolic action with strong lower end power.
