Ajlee Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Hello everyone, first post here but I need some help. Last year while searching the good old internet I stumbled across a very nice list of tackle to basically get started bass fishing with. The site had links to the products at Bass Pro and some links to Amazon I think. It was some guys personal opinion on what to have as good starter tackle. Well long story short, I cannot for the life of me find this site again. I have a partial list of things I bought but I was thinking he had more stuff on his list so I was going to try and find it and buy the rest of the stuff on his list. If anyone has any clue what I'm talking about or where I might be able to find it, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted January 22, 2019 Super User Posted January 22, 2019 Where will you be fishing? The list will vary depending on where and how you will be fishing. There are some staples for sure, but I'm not bringing the same boxes to Mexico than I would to 1000 Islands. 1 Quote
Ajlee Posted January 22, 2019 Author Posted January 22, 2019 I fish in Ohio and Lower Michigan, all relatively small lakes. Quote
RyneB Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Buzzbait, Couple packs of Senkos, green pumpkin tubes, a frog, popper, spinnerbait, swim jig, some hooks and weights will be a good start. Then build knowledge and go from there. Learn everything you can from this site during the winter months. The biggest mistake I made when I first started getting serious about bass fishing was buying everything and anything. I had no plan or knowledge of how to effectively use the baits I was buying. Time on the water is the best learning tool. 1 Quote
snake95 Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 You are about to be deluged with a ton of different answers. As a relatively recent rookie, my simple advice is this: the popular and common baits work. Get a few lures out of the fundamental categories, in the standard weights/sizes. Take the time to go to a bass pro, or better yet a Walmart. Look at the lures. You will get to know them when you see them. Stick with common brands. You'll get too much advice about color. Basic colors are good. Pick colors you like. If you need someone to tell you what to get? Get green (it won't be called "green"), get blue/purple, get white, get black, get pink if you feel like it. Plastic worms. Mandatory: "Zoom" trick worms. 1 or 2 bags. Optional: 1 pack of Yum dingers. Optional: 3" Yum grubs. Spinner baits. If you are at Walmart, you will see Strike King, maybe War Eagle. Pick up ideally 3 in different sizes and colors. 2 is also OK Tackle: Hooks: 2/0 and 3/0. EWG or straight shank. (I know, the size/type debate will rage. Just grab two packs and go) Bullet weights. Maybe 1/4 oz or 3/8 oz. I'd get 1/4 oz. If you buy the grubs, get 1 pack of 1/8 oz ballhead jigs or "Z man" Shroomz. 1/16 oz ideally. Done. About $45. Learn to fish those and then next on the list are more classics: A Rebel PopR or Heddon Torpedo. No 9 Rapala floater in silver. A buzzbait. Senkos. From there it gets wild. 3 Quote
EGbassing Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 T-rig, spinnerbait, jig, grub/jighead, popper, jerkbait, crankbait, and swimbait are all great starter lures. Quote

Super User Spankey Posted January 22, 2019 Super User Posted January 22, 2019 Maybe try hooking up with a few local tackle shops and pick their brains. They will generally help out with that stuff is you’re gonna buy something. Just a thought. The range of this fishing stuff is too broad. Much of it is unnecessary to catch bass. Start out on the slow side and don’t get overwhelmed. Quote

Super User Log Catcher Posted January 22, 2019 Super User Posted January 22, 2019 I have seen articles like you are talking about. They are done by the pro fisherman. Some info on this is good but you have to remember they are telling you to get products from the companies that are sponsoring them. Quote

IowaHusker28 Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Ah the good ole days of building up tackle. Before you know it, you'll have more plastic and lures than you know what to do with. If I am going out to do some bank fishing here is what I'll carry. 2 rods. 1 spinning, 1 casting. Spinning rod 7ft medium, 15lb braid to 10lb fluro. Can throw just about everything Casting rod 7ft-7ft'3 medium heavy. 30-50lb braid. Can also just about throw everything Hollow body frog - white bottom, black bottom Square bill - shad, craw/red color. KVD 1.5 3/8oz; spinnerbait, chatterbait, and buzz bait in white and chartreuse, black n blue, green-pumpkin Senkos/bps "senkos" green-pumpkin. Multiple bags Some kind of trickworm. Zoom, roboworm, berkley, etc. Various Jigs. Swim/pitching/casting jig in white, greenpumpkin, black n blue. Greenpumkin craws. Rage craw, vile craw, etc. This is for jig trailers or standalone. Greenpumkin-ish paddle tail swimbait. Sk caffeine shad, swimming fluke. For trailers or standalone. VMC Neko hooks. You can use these to neko rig, wacky rig, or drop shot. Worm Hooks/ewg in 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 Weights - Worm weights in 1/4oz, and 1/2oz. Drop Shot weights in 1/4oz. Wildcard: Ned Rig hooks - you can cut a senko in half and put it on this. (fish catching machine) Wildcard pt 2. A Whooper Plopper in the bone color. Kind of a longer list but you can go to just about every pond, lake, body of water and catch a bass with these. Additional things to have fishing. A good pair of fishing/needlenose pliers with a line cutter. Polarized sunglasses (they dont have to be $200 sunglasses) this will help a ton breaking down the bank/water. A cheap backpack that is big enough to keep all of these items/big enough to hold 3700 tackle boxes. 1 Quote

Ajlee Posted January 26, 2019 Author Posted January 26, 2019 Well after hours of searching the internet I found the website but...it no longer existed. www.bassinyak.com This guy had a pretty good write up on what to have to start out in bass fishing. Not a professional selling tackle for his company, just a average guy with what worked for him. But either way I still don't have the whole list. I found my order from tackle warehouse and this is what I bought. If you guys have any other suggestions to add to this list let me know. I appreciate any advice. W.E.
