Super User ChrisD46 Posted January 21, 2019 Super User Posted January 21, 2019 Although there may be newer , more exciting winter fishing baits for bass - a 3.5" ~ 4" single tail grub on a 1/8th oz. ~ 1/4th oz. ball heads will still whack 'em ! For those of you who fish a single tail grub on a jig head - list your winter grub set up . Mine : 7 ft. M/F spinning rod 2500 series spinning reel #8 lb. co-poly line (or #15 lb. braid main line with #8 lb. FC leader) Zoom Fat Albert Grub (Green Pumpkin , Watermelon Red & White Pearl ) 1/8oz. & 3/16th oz. Gama Round Ball Jig Head 5 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted January 21, 2019 Super User Posted January 21, 2019 My setup is much like yours. I fish grubs too, but also use blade bait, tail spinners and I plan on fishing lipless baits also. Ever try a Mann's Stingray grub? Sometimes less is more in cold water Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 21, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 21, 2019 I hopped this around on the bottom on Saturday. One of my hand poured baits an old timer makes for me. Super soft. This one used to be watermelon but I left it in a bag of pumpkin lizards. I kind of like the resulting blend 3 Quote

Also, it has a 60 degree eye, which ends up at 90 degrees rigged this way. Quote

Not too different than ned. Quote
padon Posted January 22, 2019 Posted January 22, 2019 Yes very similar to Ned fishing very subtle action that does the trick in winter Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted January 22, 2019 Super User Posted January 22, 2019 Zoom fat albert kills this time of year. I t-rig it seems to get hung alot less. 2 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 22, 2019 Super User Posted January 22, 2019 I like GYCB single tail grub. I caught a ton of crappie and large mouth. I also like Berkley's Power Grub. Just about any color seems to work in cold water/early spring. 1 Quote

Another vote for the Zoom FA. I rig mine on a ball head jig exposing the hook. I get hung up a bit but I have fewer misses. 1 Quote
Birdman2136 Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 In my opinion if you take a new angler out you should be giving them a 4" Kalin's Grub on a 1/8 ounce darter head or ball head jig. Slow roll it back and you'll get bit. Such an under utilized presentation. Also 4 or 5 inch grubs can be thrown on the back of a skirted swim jig for good success. Just use a versatile rod. 7'0 Med/Fast ALX Soul with a Daiwa Exceler 2500. 10lb braid with a 6lb flurocarbon leader. Edit: Need to make it weedless.. a little trick I use is a 1/8 ounce SC Dirty jigs Shakey head jig. 1 Quote
rangerjockey Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 I use a medium power Yamamoto spinning rod with a Symetre and 5lb. Maxima. Chompers grub either Gray red flake or white black flake. Quote

Although I dont necessarily write down every bite. If you look at the rocks in the pic you will see why I bury the hook. I would say 75 percent or more of my fishing is done with that little hook, a standard 1/8 oz round ball jig head. I fish plastic worms, tubes, grubs, and gulp minnows with it. Which is pretty much all I throw with a few exceptions 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 23, 2019 Super User Posted January 23, 2019 Well, consider this: I quit fishing grubs when the Rage Tail Menace was introduced. I fish it T-rigged, weedless, ticking the bottom for the most part. This is the only artificial lure I have ever used that out-fished live bait (smallmouth on the Tennessee River). Just give them a try and see what you think. Quote

My grandson was the first to use it, on a shakey head. Very good grub. I don't see why it wouldn't work in cold water, slowly retrieved near bottom. Quote

It indeed works in cold water. I have never considered the menace a grub, although it says grub on the package haha. It’s a craw in my eyes 1 Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 24, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 24, 2019 I think I got them at a local tackle store, there was no brand on the last batch I got so I'm guessing they are made in someone's basement . I use the arkies from Walmart quite a bit also. When you hang up hundreds of times , it helps to have a hook that might bend (a tad). I would rather use a strong hook but I would also not rather hang up and retie all day. They hold big smallmouth surprisingly well as long as you don't horse them. Usually they are hooked in the roof of the mouth and very difficult to unhook. They don't throw the bait nearly as often as a rattle trap Quote
