Bass fishing Vs other sports

Just last night and i stumbled across youtube videos on arm wrestling and spent the rest of my night watching endless videos on this sport and was fascinated on how seriously people take it,  a lot of their videos get crazy amount of views.  it got me wondering what other sports that we might not even think would be equal in popularity to bass fishing. I know compared to the big sports like, basketball or football there is no real comparison but what about ping pong or bowling?  Ill list some other professional sports and you tell me if theyre more or less popular than bass fishing.

4)skateboarding

5)bodybuilding/powerlifting

6)badminton 

7)darts

8)competitive eating- is the nathans eating competition more popular than the classic?

My guess is everything on your list is less popular than bass fishing. However, I try to surround myself with good influences who support fishing and fish themselves. If someone isn't into/supportive of fishing I generally don't need them in my life...?

I dont know man, I think most guys know Tony Hawk even if they dont skateboard. but i doubt many people know KVD who dont fish. So I would think skateboarding would be above bass fishing.

Yeah, you've got me on that one.  I guess I've never really thought about skateboarding as a sport... but then again most people probably don't think of fishing as a sport.

I don't know, but I consider a "sport" to have an element of defense.  That definition eliminates

most of what you have listed. Maybe fishing is a sport in a tournament situation, but for me no

matter how passionate I am about it, fishing is still just a hobby.

 

I like "fishing", but I like "catching" a lot more. I fish with friends and it is NEVER competitive. 

My buddy catching a monster is more important to me than anything I catch, especially if I am

the guy that put him on it!  My best year ever I put a dozen guys on their Personal Best. It doesn't

get any better than that.

I don't consider "skateboarding" to be a sport since my grandfather broke his hip because of one. He was drunk one night and came home and his great grandchild had left his skateboard on the floor. He went upstairs, slept off the night before and came down the next morning. He had a hearty breakfast, took out the trash, fed the dog and took a nap. When he woke up from his nap he did some dusting around the house, rehung a crooked picture of Elvis standing next to Richard Nixon and wrote out some checks for some bills. Then, as he was walking out of the house, it happened. He fell over trying to pick up the skateboard that was lying around. And that is how he broke his hip because of a skateboard.

That's terrible about your grandpa.....but I've got to ask, if my grandpa tries to pick up a football that one of his great grands left in the floor and breaks his hip does that mean football isn't a sport?‍♂️

I agree, most of those (including bass tournaments) are what I would consider to be contests, not sports.

 

A couple of decades ago, I came up with what I believe the criteria for a sport should be:

1. It must require athletic skill - By athletic skill, I mean more than just hand-eye coordination.  Contestants who have attributes like balance, co-ordination, strength, endurance or agility should have an advantage over others who do not.  Out of shape participants who do well in a sport should be rare.  This would knock out things like Darts or Bowling;
    
2. The scoring system must not be subjective - If a winner is determined by points awarded by a judge or group of judges as opposed to a contestant accomplishing something faster or more than an opponent, I believe this rules out something from being a sport.  If the judge is more like a referee, awarding points for things accomplished (like in wrestling), then that meets the criteria.  Things like Gymnastics or Ice skating, while meeting the first requirement, are examples of contests that don't meet this one.  The odd one for this item is boxing or MMA, because you can win by knocking out an opponent, but you can also win by judges subjectively awarding you the win.  Make all bouts unlimited rounds with no scoring...
    
3. Defense must be part of the contest - Defense allows a contestant to impose his will upon his opponent, an element I find to be oh-so important in sport.  This makes things like track & field better defined as athletic contests than sports.

Powerlifting is a sport. Olympic weight lifting is a sport. Speed walking is a sport. Swimming is a sport. Running is a sport. Bodybuilding is not a sport and it never will be. As for bass fishing it is considered a sport by many but most athletic people do not consider bass fishing a sport. With that said I am very fond of bass fishing and it is one of my favorite hobbies but I do not consider it a sport. Bass fishing is very popular since its a hobby that almost anyone can do and you do not have to be in good shape to do well in it.

You will never see bodybuilding in the Olympic Games and that is a good thing! The current top bodybuilders will never be able to pass the Olympic Anti Doping Committee since these people are well known for abusing anabolic steroids to reach the unnatural size they have. I see bass fishing as a hobby as well and not a sport. An exception might be considering land based shark fishing as a sport, especially if the person uses no fighting belt, no fighting chair, help from others to land the shark. You definitely get a decent workout catching a shark bigger than the average man if you catch that shark without a fight belt or fighting chair.

By "following", do you mean the number of people who watch others participate in the sport or activity or do you mean the number of people who actually participate in the sport or activity?

 

I ask because fishing and bowling are two activities who have a high participation rate (many folks will do either once or twice a year), but have a small following as far as being an audience.  Other activities such as football are the opposite, lower participation rates but high audience rates.

thats actually a good sport to compare.

i wonder how the bass pros average salary is.

this is what i found about pro womens pay and its fan base. my guess it would rank slightly below bass fishing.  I have  watched  the womens NCAA tournament a few times.

Sounds like my wife lol.  When we first started dating, I asked her to go fishing with me and the first thing she said was 'I don't feel like putting a worm on a hook and waiting all day for a bite'.  Fast forward a few years, and now she's always up for fishing.  She even has her own baitcast setup now, a Pflueger President XT on a 7' M Lightning Rod

I remember having a conversation with a friend many, many years ago (in the 80's) about what was a sport and what was not a sport. We did this when we were discussing the Olympics and what was classified as a "sport" and why the USA does not do as well in the winter Olympics as compared to the summer Olympics. He said that only those games where the participants wear a jock were considered a sport. Otherwise, it is just for fun and could not be considered a "sport." Have things changed in all these years or what?

 

But I do think bass fishing can be considered a sport as those little green monsters can put up one heck of a defense after you hook them.
