Tatula 100 vs. SLX as a "workhorse" reel

I'm a self proclaimed Shimano fanboy but after being curious of all the talk on here about the Fuego CT and how great it was for it's price point I bought one off Ebay a few months ago. I agree, the hype is real as it's a great reel for the price and I enjoy fishing it almost as much as my Curado K's. ?

 

I just got a new Dobyns Sierra 734c and will be using it for spinnerbaits,buzz-baits and maybe some small swimbaits. I need a "workhorse" reel to pair it with and was originally going to use an extra Curado K I have but the bait monkey has a hold on me and you know the rest...

 

Which reel is going to be better and pair better with the 734C? I know Daiwa advertises the new Tatula 100 as a more finesse reel but I've seen vids on people using it as a workhorse. The Tatula 100 is pricier than the SLX but I can get either reel for $100 right now.

Why not just get another fuego for around 65 bucks? Thats what all my "workhorse" reels are. My lightweight, skipping, and pitching reels are tatula ct or tatula sv.

I can't think of any low profile reels that would be true workhorses, reels you can beat up or carelessly throw in the bed of your pickup without worry.  You could probably find a used Shimano Calcutta 100 or 200 for that price, or a used Abu 4600 C3 or 5500 C3 for half of that.  The round reels are workhorses.  I base my comment off of the availability of replacement parts and ease of self service.  It's quite easy to find anything you'd need for those reels.

My SLX pairs flawlessly with my Sierra 734 it's incredibly balanced. And seeing as the Slx and tatula both weigh 6.9 oz I think the tatula should pair just as nicely. I think you'd get more casting distance with the tatula. If you can get both for the same price I'd go with the Tatula.

My Curado K's are great workhorses. I don't care for round reels, but thanks anyway.

I would say try a tatula 150 instead of 100 if you want something for chucking and winding

I’m more of a Daiwa fanboy than anything. That said, I own a bunch of both Shimano and Daiwa reels including the slx and a tatula 150. I like both but the slx is smaller and more comfortable, I’d assume the 100 would be about the same. The tatulas are nice reels, the sv models are really really nice. But between the two you’re looking at I’d go with the slx, it’s a really really nice real for the price point. I have two, one is on a 733 the other on a 735 and they feel like they were made for each other.

I bought the Tatula 100 and have it to be an excellent reel. Casting distance and control have been extremely good and it's a good pitching reel.  I don't know how you could go wrong.

Despite what the advertisement for the new Tatula 100 as being "finesse" oriented, it isn't. It's a deeper spool that isn't light but isn't heavy either. My guess is somewhere the translation for a small reel was misunderstood for being finesse. It is however a super good casting reel that's very smooth for something that you can get for 100$ if you look.

Huge Daiwa fan here, the new 100 is super smooth BUT I just prefer the CT platform a tad more. (Tat CT, CT Type R, SV, Zillion SV) 

 

Although I have been hearing great things about the SLX and shimanos return to aluminum parts.

The 100 is a great reel. Nice and small and light weight. Casts great. I also have a Tatula 150 but be aware that it's 8oz. It took me a little while to get used to its weight. I was used to Lew's 6.3oz reels which are very small and light.

With the Tatula 100 there was no adjustment period. Both reels are very easy to set up for casting. I bought a second 100

for $100.00 at Sportsman's Outfitters, they are on sale right now. Also Chatterbaits and, Bandit 100s were added because they are a great price now too. I need to stop buying tackle.

 

Also by the way I have it on a Fury 734 and 735 and it's a prefect match. It's a nicely balanced setup for such a heavy duty rod.

It actually does have an adjustment. The "zero" adjust trickled down from the steez sV TW and is set at the factory for just a blonde one of side to side play. You can move the brake dial to tighten/loosen it up but it's very difficult to turn.

I not talking about the cast adjustment. I'm talking about adjusting from the 6.3oz reel to the 8oz reel, size and weight.

I actually picked up a tatula 100 today... on clearance. $79.99 for a lefty model, which I prefer. Due to weather I haven't even dry casted it yet, but man it seems extremely smooth.... I backlashed it while normally pulling out line to run through guides on my rod I paired it with. I don't see why it wouldn't work with finesse, but will update in a day or so when I actually get a chance to chuck it.

New Tatula 100. I ended up ordering one of each, yes I'm a sucker. The deal on the Tatula was sold out of the original gear ratio I wanted but ordered one anyway in a different ratio. Not many deals on new reels like that and I'd be kicking myself if i didn't take full advantage. Plus, found all ratios on the SLX LH I was looking at, done and done.

Is there much difference in the quality of the reel as far as the build of the reel between the 100 vs the 150? Do you see much of a difference between the two when it comes to performance and which one would you recommend between the 100 & the 150

For the money, the Fuego CT is hard to beat.  I have 5 of them.  They cast a mile, smooth as butter, good drag, take abuse and keep working.  If I had to choose between the Tatula 100 and Shimano SLX, I would not hesitate on the Tatula.  I have 2 100s and 3 SLXs, the 100 is a better reel IMO.

 

I also own a Tatula 150 and 200.  I like the 100s better.  I use the larger reels for deep cranking and frogging.
