Timothy Glen Vaughan Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 I know this has been asked before, but I can't figure out an answer to my specific question. I used alcohol to clean some 1/2 oz red eye shad and rusted the hooks :? I know, bad idea. I am in the market for replacement hooks and am unsure of what side to get. Most suggest Mustad UltraPoint KVD Elite Series Triple Grip Treble Hook with 1 Extra Strong and 2 Extra Short Hooks in size 2 - is this correct for both hooks? or Should I get something like Gamakatsu Short Shank Treble Hook in size 4? Appreciate the any help! Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted January 17, 2019 Super User Posted January 17, 2019 I would go with a size 4 in a regular shank hook or a size 2 in a short shank hook. The Mustad KVD short shank hooks you mentioned are great. Use the same size hook for the front and the back. Size 4 is what comes on the bait from the factory but short shank hooks allow you to go up a size without the hooks tangling. So a size 2 in the KVD short shank hook will work great. Edit: The Gamakatsu short shank hooks are sharper but more expensive. Again, short shank hooks, go up a size. So size 2 for any short shank hook. 1 Quote
kenmitch Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 Cabelas has those KVD's on sale in size 2 (11pk) for $3.88 currently. No free shipping. https://www.cabelas.com/product/bargain-cave/fishing/fishing-line-terminal-tackle/pc/105591780/c/105740280/sc/105746580/mustad-kvd-x-strong-x-short-triple-grip-treble/1159803.uts?slotId=5 I ordered 3 packs last night and used my rewards to cover the $5.00 shipping fee. Anything over $50 gets free shipping. I picked up some older lures from my bro that have rusty hooks so I needed some upgrade options myself. Quote VanDam has reported that he is able to upsize at least one size on most of his lures, and in some cases even two sizes. His venerable 1/2-ounce Strike King Red Eye Shad comes with size four hooks out of the package, he upgrades to a size two. If it works for him it'll work for the rest of us. 1 Quote
