I write to you on day three in the hospital.  Saturday,  the pain was all day but,  twice it so bad I almost passed out.  I was away from home and kept thinking a serious trip to the men's room was in my future and would solve everything.    By the time Sunday morning came and I'd not slept and made a dozen trips to the can,  I asked my wife to drive me to to ER.  It took 8 mg of morphine and the pain was still not completely gone.  I was transferred to a local hospital,  the pain was incredible until the right dose of narcotic was found.  The pain on top of the distended abdomen is a terrible combination.  The good part is that i had no vomiting,  no blood and no perforation.  Just pain meds,  antibiotics and resting the bowel.  I haven't eaten since 730AM Saturday morning and have had nothing by mouth since Sunday morning.  I knew about the disease because my dad,  brother,  sister and best buddy have it.  I didn't realize it is such a serious and life threatening disease.

Sending positive thoughts.    Went through it while on a business trip 600 miles from home about 6 years ago.  4 days in hospital.   Sucks majorly, but sounds like you got to good care before it turned truly devastating.   Best of luck going forward.

Reminds me I'm overdue for another colonoscopy....

Lost a 12 inch section of my colon because of diverticulitis. They called it the J channel. Had it for 5 days before I went to the ER. They keep me for 4 days, pumping nuthin' but IV fluids through me. 2 more bouts of it in a year and a half was enough to get the surgery. My advice, from now on eat plenty of fiber.

No Joke ~

Follow your doctor's orders and take care of this.

Hope you can recover strong.

I had my bout with it - pain, re-hap, getting off the pain meds,  all of it - Brutal.

I was conducting training at the US Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut,  Mother's Day 2001 -

Out of nowhere - perforated diverticulitis,  lead to massive sepsis.  I was 41 yrs old and probably in some of the best shape of my life (so I thought).

Emergency surgery - 2 ft of colon removed, colostomy installed - 21 days in the hospital.

Second sepsis - another emergency surgery.

Lost wicked body weight - 195 to 160.   Rode the couch for weeks.

6 months to recover and get strong enough to have corrective surgery.

Corrective surgery went well - 3 months later - back on the job. (Drill instructor)

Getting back in the gym was un-real hard - core was shot.

Took 2 years to feel like "I was Back".

So like I said, It's no joke.

Sounds like you caught it before it turned real ugly.  Take it easy and just do what the doctors say.

Thanks.  I feel that if I could just fart for about a minute straight, I would feel much better.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Glad you caught it before you needed surgery. Some of my relatives were not as fortunate.

ive farted for that long, it doesn't help anything, especially your marriage.

my buddy had it, complained literally for 20 years about stomach pain. We would go out to eat and he would be in the can 5 minutes later. Finally 2 years ago his gf took him to the hospital. A weeks stay, then a section of intestine removed, the long recovery, the change of diet, but he's better, finally.

As you can tell @dave you are in some pretty good company. Its far more common than most people think. Just follow your doctors advice and take it easy for a while. Good luck.

Day seven.   I miss my bed.  I miss food.  I miss solid stools and what not being in pain feels like.

I also missed the arrival of my new Kistler Helium 3.  It arrived a few days ago...LOL

21 days in the hospital and it is great to be home.  I ended up needing surgery which I had last Tuesday.  I was discharged Saturday.  PICC and JP in place still,  hoping to have them both removed Thursday.  I lost 20 pounds.  I am moving from full liquids into soft solid food very well.  (food goes in,  waste comes out with no issues or hang ups)

I am (was) a very muscular person and now I don't recognize myself.  I want to keep trim but,  I need to put some density back in my musculature.  My shirts now hang on my upper body like they are hanging from a clothes hanger.

Glad to hear it - Hope it continues to go well for you.

I share a very similar experience - you can get it back - just takes time.

Slow & steady will ensure no hiccups along the way.

Work closely with you MD as you transition off pain Meds.

It's a serious aspect of recovery and one that should not be taken for granted.

Some people get themselves in trouble here.

Good Luck
