bassheel Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 Which "house" brand rod(academy, bps, etc) has surprised you with its performance? What techniques did you use it for? Quote
CroakHunter Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 Cabelas tournament zx 7'5 mh crankshaft. It is labeled a crankbait rod but with a fast tip. I use it as a Carolina rig, deep texas rig, football jig rod. I have thrown big cranks, spinnerbait, and chatterbaits on it but I like it for deep water single hook applications best. Quote

Sadly the ZX is being discontinued, from what I heard. Quote

Jelvas Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 I haven´t tried house brand rods (newest models) in a while but Bass Pro Shops used to have some nice rods. 1 Quote
moguy1973 Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 I have an Academy Ethos spinning rod that I like a lot. It's become my Ned rig rod and has worked well for that method. BPS Johnny Morris Carbonlite rods are good too. Quote
junyer357 Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 Academy ethos rods. Now have 4 med-mod 7' for cranks and a spinning rod. Quote
kbeeb374 Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 Cabelas Arachnids are my current favorite rod and they are discontinued........ I also liked the XML spinning rods.. again discontinued. so while i love/loved cabela's brand rods, watch out they are going to be discontinued if not already due to the merger with bps. 1 Quote

I really liked the older black Carbonlites, still have a couple 7'MH fast that are good all around rods. Had a 6'9" MH Xfast and 7'Medium all performed better than expected. I can't speak for new one's Quote
waymont Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 The Cabelas Walleye series spinning rods are fantastic. Really light and sensitive. Quote
Tizi Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 I have 3 BPS Johnny Morris Carbonlite 2.0. Very good rods for the money. I paid $79.99 each on BF. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted January 15, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 15, 2019 From what I've read, personally seen and felt, the JM Signature Rods seem to be excellent. And I'm not saying that because you see some pro's using them. Mike Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 15, 2019 Super User Posted January 15, 2019 BPS Extreme line of rods. Handled all techniques very well. Out of production now. And did you know that Seaguar makes the BPS line? Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 15, 2019 Super User Posted January 15, 2019 If I had to pick one..... The Johnny Morris line but...... As a general rule of thumb I shy away from rods that have a store or a persons name on it. Doesn't mean they can't be a good rod, especially since most places have way improved the level of quality with these offerings. It just hasn't been my thing. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted January 15, 2019 Super User Posted January 15, 2019 Cabelas mag touch rods were excellent. A wide variety of models, including 2 piece spinning and casting rods. I have their medium 2-piece 7’ casting rod that serves as my trunk rod. Very sensitive. I’ve caught everything from gills, trout, lmbs, Smbs and even salmon. It’s as do all as a rod can be. Like many other house rods, they’re no longer made. I’ve had it for perhaps 10 years give or take and it has been in action every season. Sad will be the day I break it. Quote

MAN Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 H20 Xpress Ethos rods. Designed by a couple Texas fisherman and manufactured overseas. No different than the design and manufacturing of name branded rods. Quote

Super User Log Catcher Posted January 16, 2019 Super User Posted January 16, 2019 I bought a couple of Cabelas fish eagle spinning rods. I haven't gotten to use them a very much yet but they seem to be good rods. When I was looking for them I was at a BPS. I asked someone in the fishing dept. if the had the Cabelas rods. He said they wouldn't bring their rods in to BPS. He said BPS fishing stuff was much better quality than Cabelas. Quote
Drew03cmc Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Academy Ethos, I paid $9 for my 7'3 H. It's a killer rod! Quote
LionHeart Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 When I think of being surprised by a house rod I think Cabelas ZX rods for sure. Guess I'll be trying the BPS rods at some point. They now own my beloved Cabelas store. 15 minutes ago, Log Catcher said: I bought a couple of Cabelas fish eagle spinning rods. Super User WRB Posted January 16, 2019 Super User Posted January 16, 2019 What rod company makes house brands? BPS/Cabela's doesn't own a rod company, Acadamy or DSG doesn't own a rod company so where do these house brands come from? Who designs them? Would you buy something that you have no idea where it came from? Tom 1 Quote

Drew03cmc Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Tom, I have no idea. For my money, though, the H2O Xpress rods are the best store brand rod on the market. Their Mettle reels are top notch as well. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 16, 2019 Super User Posted January 16, 2019 Not long ago both Cabela's and BPS identified the maker of thier house brands, Fenwick made the Fish Eagle brand and Daiwa made their baitcasting reels for examples. This was handy to know for spare parts purposes. Fenwick is no longer made domestically the rods are made off shore by the same source who supplies the house brands. The rods and reels are basically throwaway or disposable products, no spare parts inventory anywhere. Tom Quote
