Golden algae conspiracy

Here's the deal. We have had "golden algae" blooms here in arizona past couple winters. I have seen healthy waters completely die off. It's a very sad thing. Upon hearing about the problem I did a LITTLE research to be sure there wasn't something I could be doing to prevent the issue. It seems most researchers agree they don't know where the algae comes from. And can be spread from lake to lake via wet gear, waders, boats etc. It also comes on in winter and is set dormant by warming waters. Heres where my problem is. Here in AZ we use a variaty of fish to clean out waters. To avoid chemicals (Extremely expensive chemicals kill golden algae). A set of ponds in the valley separated by no more than 50ft of land. 1 had the algae( public waterway) the other did not (waterway off limits) i know for a fact that water 1 had the "golden algae" bloom since it was reported on the news as well as government(azgfd) websites. I also know that waterway 2 did not have the same problem. Because I have permission to fish it and it continues to be an EXCELLENT fishery. How can a body of water 50 ft away not get hit, but 20 other lakes and pond in the area can? Especially if birds are continuously traveling between waters.

We get a toxic fluorescent bluegreen algae bloom here periodically. Many claim it's from fertilizer runoff

We too have all kinds of Algae problems with Okeechobee, the everglades, and red tide coast lines.  Most of this is do to fertilizers, and run off from big sugar and all the development in Central Florida south.  Very sad what has been happening to these pristine water ways.  The problem could be fixed, but expensive.  We can fix now, or it will cost a lot more later.

I believe Canyon and Saguaro had those golden algae blooms, although I could be mistaken.  They say there were major kills in those lakes.  I live in Tucson and just recently started fishing in Arizona and had never even heard of golden algae until very recently.  I primarily fish Roosevelt, but would like to fish other waters as well.  They say some of the fishing is coming back after the kills from golden algae.

 

My question is whether this is an annual event that has happened for a very long time and only gets bad every decade or so, or is this a completely new event that just recently started to occur?
