Lake Fork Day Trip

Hey everyone,

 

I'll be visiting my girlfriend's parents in May and they live ~1 hr away from Lake Fork. I'm going to try to sneak out of the house one day and get some time on the water, especially since I currently live in West Texas and don't get out enough.

 

I don't have a boat or kayak of my own, so I was looking at renting a kayak. I've been fishing small ponds my whole life and have only been on big water a handful of times. My question is am I getting over my head with something like this? Is Lake Fork worth trying out for just one day only having never been before? Any smaller lakes near Canton I should try instead? Thanks!

If you can find a yak no problem. Put in some where in one of the many coves and get after it! Id stay away from the main lake. For the full experience reccomend hiring a guide. I know a few really good ones. Also many other lakes in the area. Canton city lake is a sleeper and its got MEGAS

It only takes one cast to hook a Hawg & Fork is definitely the lake!

You think I'd have decent luck going into pretty much any cove? I'm going into this whole thing blind. I'll make sure to do some research to shed some light on how to catch 'em in May.

 

And I fished Sam Rayburn with a guide once. I caught a few decent fish but I didn't really like the guide, to be honest. So for that I'm a little hesitant about spending the money but I'd be willing to budget over the next few months if I could get a guide that really made my experience a good one.

My personal opinion the money saved by not hiring a guide could be spent stay at the lake longer.

 

Then there's the satisfaction of saying I caught on my own!

From a yak you have luxury of being able to put in just about anywhere thats open to the public. If it were me id pick 2 or 3 areas. Id launch at either coffee creek, or running, from the 2966 bridge or both. For half the day.  Then  id load up drive over to quail hollow in little caney and finish the day there. Be prepared to contend with a bunch of bass boats !
