Patrickcatalano Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 So in two days I went from looking at the Curado K to now seriously considering getting the Metanium. Is it worth the 400$ or should I pass? Quote
tkunk Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 I have both. The Metanium is smoother and casts farther than the Curado K. The value of that is up to you. Quote
Joshua van Wyk Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Take a look at the Chrinarch Mgl, I think it's a happy medium between the two reels. I dont have a Metanium to compare it to but its definetly nicer than the Curado. 1 Quote

ItsHardwick Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 No metanium but I do own both chronarch mgls and curado ks. In my opinion it’s worth the extra money for the chronarch. Just feels like a much nicer reel and they are oh so smooth. Quote

The good news is that the Curado K brass main gear is compatible with the met and can be swapped in down the road. I've owned a Metanium MGL and had absolutely no issues and still feels as smooth as when I bought it. I have spoken with many reel techs from Shimano as well as Dan Isaac at Reelex and they say the aluminium gears don't like current or fishing really heavy resistance baits. I only fish bottom contact stuff on my MGLs. If you do that, no issues will arise. BTW swapping out from aluminium to brass main gears will void your warranty with Shimano. Just make sure its what you want to do and its worth it. Quote

If you aren't set on spending the money on a Met MGL, I highly suggest the Chronarch MGL. Quote
johnD. Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 I had a chronarch mgl , still have a met mgl. The chronarch is no metanium as far as longevity goes. Like the post above states , met mgl below $300 from japan. Quote
22RangerZ520R Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 I have 10 Metanium MGL's, zero issues. My vote is for the Metanium. Good luck. Quote
LxVE Bassin Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 I would buy 2 curados and use the left over money on something else. Quote

Thank you again everyone, my only concern is that they don’t have warranty’s on reels shipped to America? Is that true? I found it on this forum Quote

For a lot of us this is not a concern as we either don't have issues out of the box with the reels or just fix whatever is wrong with the reel ourselves. It is a bit of a risk but worth it. The only known issue with these reels are the brittle main gear which can be fixed yourself with a Curado K main gear from The Tackle Trap. Alright thank you. I think I’m gonna order the Metanium from there. Only concern is what you said about the “main gear being brittle”, how long would it last if I don’t change the gear? I’ll be honest, I’m not the best at assembling things. Quote
TNReb Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 Does Digitaka ship from the US or Japan? I looked all over their site and couldnt confirm. If they come from Japan, how long does shipping typically take? Quote

If it gets finesse use tossing 1/4 oz baits I'm sure it will last longer than pitching jigs or high resistance cranking applications. Gear swaps are easy to do. I've replaced most of my aluminum gears in my Daiwas with brass ones over time. Worst case scenario you can send the reel in to the Tackle Trap and they can install the Curado K gear. I think they do a deal on the swap and a carbontex drag upgrade. It I was in the market for one that would be the 1st thing I do but that's me. I'm not an aluminum gear fan. Thank you! I just purchased the metanium MGL online about 20 minutes ago. Quote

Don't remember the number of days, but I am guessing around 4-5 days to arrive. Quote
CrankFate Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 Great reel. Too chromed out bling for my tastes. But I don’t believe claims that the gears are worse. People said that about stainless gears, I have reels with stainless gears, they stay truer to how they felt fresh out of the box than brass. I’d expect that to be the case with aluminum, because the “aluminum” in a metanium is probably that hard light titanium feeling low mass metal found in most newer reels in the worm and gearshaft and not forged aluminum foil. But those days are worth it for the money you save. Quote
CrankFate Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 9 hours ago, BaitFinesse said: The issue is well documented and the gear is indeed aluminum. Many aluminum gears become geary feeling and noisy over time compared to brass but the Metanium micro module aluminum gears are a particularly bad offender with even reports of broken teeth. Fortunately this great reel has a remidy in the Curado K brass micro module main gear. I believe they are compatible with the 13 Metanium too. I just don’t believe these types of claims. I could be wrong, since I don’t have this reel, but with the internet and grey market items, there have to be lots of bootlegs and refurbs out there. I don’t believe a top of the line reel from a top brand would have that problem. The manufacturer would change the problem part. I’ve never personally seen any problem like this with any product (especially rods which are easier to break). I’m sure it could happen, but even my fake $18 Chinese plastic reels don’t have these types of problems. If anything, these reports are all the reason it’s best to stick to legitimate sellers. Meanwhile, my Abus all have a Geary sound and feel fresh out of the box and they’re brass!! The only thing i could see causing sound, especially on micro gear teeth, is grease. Grease causes noise and grip on small teeth, which is why I don’t grease these parts on small reels that only see freshwater. Even plastic teeth will get Geary once greased. The sound of grease on a small plastic worm gear absolutely ticks me off every turn of the handle. Edit: hey I didn’t say “ticks” me off! Quote
michaelsrex Posted January 13, 2019 Posted January 13, 2019 I also own JDM Met Mgls. I was a little concerned about the spool being a little more shallow than the US version. That was not worth the price difference as I got mine new from ebay for $265. It also holds an entire 150 yard spool of seaguar 30lb smackdown! Quote
