FCPhil Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 I purchased a 6” Savage Gear Line thru trout and looking to fish it a good amount this spring. Here is my question: With treble hook lures, I usually just sweep my rod back as soon as I feel a bite (like a crankbait) but with soft lures, I wait a moment and then set the hook (like a worm). Since this swimbait is soft plastic but also has a treble hook, how should I set the hook? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 11, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 11, 2019 Sweeps set is good but make sure to lube it up with a slippery scent like megastrike to help it slide through the fish's teeth easier. Quote
FCPhil Posted January 13, 2019 Author Posted January 13, 2019 Would a bass hold onto the bait since it is soft, or would it most likely drop it immediately because of the exposed treble? Also, can anyone recommend a good hook size and style? I lost the one in came with. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 14, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 14, 2019 They'll hold it for a long time typically. They come with a pretty small hook, I believe it's a #4. An Owner ST 36 #4 would be a good option. Quote
gobig Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 I reel and sweep at the same time. You will be moving way more line and generating a lot more force to the hook point. If your rod tip moves 48 inches of line on a hook set and you add two turns of the handle, you would be moving about 50 inches more line in the same motion, close to a total of 98 inches of line. On soft swimbaits the general rule with trebles is that you don't want them to be wider than the bait. Unless you are fishing in totally open water otherwise this is a good way to get hung up on every other cast. Quote
