PeteG Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 Hello, I'd like to build 2 spinning rods to be paired with a Tatula Lt 1000 and a Balistic Lt 3000. These will be jig rods. I like rods on the longer length side. They'll be used mainly from shore. I'd like to order the same maker and save shipping or ATC from Mudhole and get free shipping. United Composites, North Fork or ATC would be my choices. I'm open to others as well. I would like durable and not worry about a bit more weight. Jig weights would be 1/16 to 1oz. This range is across both rods not each. I never fished jigs till recently and it's a blast. I dont want UL. I recently found some local water with large crappie and on my tiny jigs by catch of some good bass and walleye. I have many older type glass rods and would like the new and lite weight technology available. Sorry for the long post.. Thanks! Quote
PeteG Posted January 8, 2019 Author Posted January 8, 2019 So my question is way too broad. After a bunch more reading, I can see that. I'll determine the specific application of this tackle and choose accordingly. I need try and see what is effective and to my liking. No real easy way to do this. Not easy, but very enjoyable! Quote
Super User MickD Posted January 8, 2019 Super User Posted January 8, 2019 Since one priority is "durable," consider the mid-range graphite rods, like RX6 and 7 rather than the top of the line stuff. In general, the lighter/higher modulus/higher sensitivity blanks are less durable than the mid-range blanks. I assure you, you can find some very good blanks in the RX6 and 7 lineups. Rainshadow is a great line with all kinds of blanks in both materials. Revelations are very high performance in RX7, and have a big variety. The RX6 3 piece travel blanks are very good. One of my favorites is the SB841. Don't be misled by its ML power. It has a light tip over a very stiff, long, butt section so it is very versatile for casting light stuff while at the same time handling powerful fish. I have built two for spinning for bonefish with jigs as light as 1/16. I would start looking at the lengths you want, then the action you want (probably fast or Xfast), the lure range, then the line test, and finally power description. The power descriptions are the least accurate designators, IMHO. Usually the lure weights and line test tell the power story. Getbitoutdoors.com is a very good source for Rainshadow blanks. Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted January 8, 2019 Posted January 8, 2019 From shore I'd look a bit further afield although United may have your blank. Go to Tackletour and check back a few years when they tested the St. Croix 5S76MLXF, I have one I love for your light reel application. It come in all the graphite except SCII I believe so sticker shock neddn't be so bad, even have a two piece version. Nice soft tip for crappie, etc. followed by good backbone for other species. The review was on 10/5/11, received an editor's choice award. Quote
PeteG Posted January 10, 2019 Author Posted January 10, 2019 Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll get building and be ready for spring. Quote
