I know that is a War Eagle but which one is it?

Mine was a 3/8 oz. The 1/2 is probably best all around size, but using the 3/8 oz. allows you to slow it down a lot an still keep it off the bottom.

I must be the only guy that doesn't like War Eagle SBs. The goldish/shiner color scheme on the other hand, I'm a big fan.

Spinnerbaits have been around along time.

I've never used any of the old spinnerbaits that used hair. I've sometimes wondered if there might be some benefits over silicone. It's definitely something different that the fish aren't seeing. I wouldn't know where to get hair or how to tie it on though.

Do you have any friends that hunt deer? Or check the salt water or fly tying section of outdoor/fishing retailers, or online, or Ebay, or fishing flea markets, or....

No deer hunting friends, but I do have some pesky squirrels in the backyard.

Glenn (site founder) uses stuff called Lumaflex.  I have a couple of bunny strip spinnerbaits, though I generally use them for northern pike fishing.

While I agree with the traditional color selection there are times I stray away from that.

Right now in our southern waters we're getting late winter & early spring rains. This changes water clarity from clear to really clear, to slightly stained to stained. Visibility is still around 3-6' but changing every three or four days.

I think these bass are "conditioned" right now to using both their vision & lateral lines. Strikes are now with be vicious, they'll stop the spinnerbait cold.

Because of the visibility I'll change to the spinnerbait shown above & a all Cooper version.

I'm pretty sure the V shape twin spin was made by Shannon years ago. If your inclined, you can get bucktail hair at BPS or Cabelas. Any good tackle shop that carries fly fishing gear should have some too. As for wrapping them, it's not really hard. Ask in the tackle building forum on this site.

You might be right but its more fun to have secret colors . I like to use sunfish patterns a lot .

Me too. In one of the smaller lakes I fish, bluegill are the main forage. A skirt with brown, purple, and a few strands of chartreuse is good. I threw only white, chartreuse, or a combo of those colors for a long time. Now, we can mix it up a little.

I think with the popularity of throwing squarebills in shallow cover, the spinnerbait kinda took a backseat.

I'm not very brave when throwing square bills in wood  with branches  . It seems like I snag up more times than not . I will usually use a spinnerbait in that situation . Now on old wood and stumps , something with no small branches I'll bang a square bill around.

I agree, and don't really feel like one is better than the other or that they're interchangeable.  Different tools, different profile, different behavior in the water.  I love me some square bills shallow in spring, but a spinnerbait is the tool if there's a lot of fallen timber.

Thanks for the info! I make my own spinnerbaits and have for years so I know what works for me. One of my fishing partners ask if I could make something like the War Eagle so I need to pick up a few to study. Right now I only own one that is a screaming eagle in mouse color that I bought years ago.

This is the spinnerbait I had mentioned.

It has a flexible blade arm not a rigid wire like almost all spinnerbaits. It's made by a company called Redbone Bait Company, there website is.

Nice looking bait! Secret Weapon Lures had a similar product.  They used snaps though, and came in a kit.  This type of design means you can get away without a trailer hook.  If the fish crashes the blades, they still get hooked by the primary hook, since they collapse.Other baits with the rigid arm, hookups suffer.  This is actually what I think most people think is a short strike.  I noticed it after adding a trailer hook when missing fish.  All the fish that day had the trailer hook in the chin.  I've since verified this phenomenon visually.

Here's the SWL bait:

I was thinking of doing the same because I'm partial to the hammered blades and I can't get that combo in the gold War Eagle. IDK why, but I just like the hammered blades. I feel like they give off more vibrations and resemble scales.

I watched a recent Jimmy Houston episode where he was throwing his new spinner bait with up sized willow leaf blades on it in 1/2 oz. (made by Lucky Strike) with great success in open water , near targets in shallow or deep water . *Jimmy Houston is the KING of spinner bait fishing for bass and has forgotten more than I will ever know - his one tip I liked was to retrieve a spinner bait where it is just out of sight on the retrieve with an occasional jerk in the retrieve . I plan to buy a couple just for grins to support Jimmy's 401k plan . My PB came on  a 3/8th oz. Booyah white / chartreuse willow / colorado combo in 14" of water nearing the end of spawn .

*Sweet  spinner bait setup ... I had to breathe into a paper bag after viewing  to keep from hyperventilating !! ... Beyond traditional color offerings - Dirty Jigs and War Eagle have some newer , interesting spinner bait offerings .

I haven't used spinnerbaits as much as I used to for several years now. Need to start using them more. I just got back from Sportsmans Warehouse. I bought one of those gold shiner spinnerbaits in the screaming eagle version that Catt loves. Guess I'll find out in the spring if he got one over on me. I also bought one in chartreuse and white. I know it will catch fish.

Log Catcher you made a wise choice following Catt's advice. That bait is a good one.

I will get a few and post what I find out. So far I have the wire size but need to get the blade sizes, etc. figured out.
