choppertime Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 can you use a crankbait rod for jerkbaits? or is the crankbait rod to whippy for this..i have a st Croix 7' medium action crankbait rod as of right now...thanks Quote
Dens228 Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 I have an AvidX M/Moderate crankbait rod that I love. I have used it for jerkbaits. Bigger jerks I throw on a MH/Fast AvidX which works out well since often during those transition periods I have a jerkbait and a crankbait tied onto different rods. Quote
Russ E Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 You can, but for me a 7 ft. Is too long. I am 6ft. 2in. Tall I prefer a 6ft. 6in. Or 6ft 10in max. 2 to 6 inches shorter doesn't sound like much, but Any longer and my rod tip slaps the water. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted January 5, 2019 Super User Posted January 5, 2019 I'd rather use a jerkbait rod for cranking oe 1 Quote
Big-Bass Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 I use the Randy Howell original Tatula (black and gold) 7' ML casting rod rated for 1/4-5/8oz. baits that has the short, full grip handle. It's am impressive rod. I also use it for cranks but it is all graphite. For larger cranks, I use a Legend Glass 74MH. Those OG Tatula rods are really great rods! 1 Quote

Super User FishTank Posted January 5, 2019 Super User Posted January 5, 2019 Yes but personally I don't think it's ideal. I have tried using a MH Fast/Mod and M Mod and both seemed odd when trying to work the bait. I tend to like a M or MH fast that 6'6'' or 6'8'' in length with stiff feeling at the reel seat and soft tip. 1 Quote
junyer357 Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 I have done it as well, but it isnt ideal. I found it is a bit "whippy" and a bit harder to work the lure like i like, once i got better with working them on a diffrent rod. The other problem to me is the rod length, above and below the reel. I switched to an older 6'4" med rod (mod fast to fast-ish action, it predates listing action on rods). It is easier to work jerkbaits with. It has a shorter butt, so im not hitting my belly constantly, and the shorter overall length lets me work it straight down without hitting water. Quote
ike8120 Posted January 6, 2019 Posted January 6, 2019 I will be using my Dobyns FR705CB for crankbaits and jerkbaits. Quote
Charlie19851987 Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 I recommend a Berkley lightning rod 6' 6" medium Quote
Born 2 fish Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 I’m a avid jerkbait user and I’ve used a lot of different rods. My favorite so far is a cheap bass pro 7’ medium cranking stick. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted April 2, 2020 Super User Posted April 2, 2020 Just depends on the build. As mentioned, if it's too"whippy" you might have a problem. However, one of my favorite "crossover" rods is a Denali Rosewood crankbait rod, model 843CB that does a fantastic job with both standard sized cranks, lipless and jerkbaits (they also make a lighter 842CB version). looking45 Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 I'm using a GLoomis GLX 802. I use it for jerk baits and topwater Quote
bunz559 Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 It seems to be personal preference. I know some anglers who use crankbait rods, particularly the Dobyn's 685cb and 684cb. Then I know folks who stick to the traditional medium power fast action rods. My experience, I do not like using crankbait rods. Slower action tips are not my preference when casting and working a jerkbait. My first dedicated jerkbait rod was purchasing a Dobyn's 685cb. This was a lesson learned and money wasted for me. The parabolic bend is great when fish are on but the slow tip was terrible when casting and ripping the bait. I ended up selling that and picking up an Orochi XX Jerkbait Special that I absolutely love. It's a medium power with a snappy fast tip. Working jerkbaits are much easier and comfortable now. I know someone with the Expride 6'10 and that too is an awesome rod. What I do miss about the Dobyn's 685cb is the length. The Orochi XX is a 6'11 while the Dobyn's is a 6'8. The slightly shorter rod just made it easier to work a jerkbait on the boat. This of course may very depending on how tall you are. People make it work though. Example, prior to having a dedicate rod I was fishing jerkbaits with a Dobyn's XP 733. Quote
Cityangler7 Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 I use a Dobyns Champion XP 705CB, works great for crank baits like the Normant NXS, DT 10s and I also use it for pointer 100 and Duo Realis 120SPs Quote
kayaking_kev Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 Most likely if it's graphite and not composite or glass. Gary Dobyns uses the 704cb graphite for jerkbaits. I've been using a Fury 703c, which has been good, but will soon have a Champion 634cb for it. Quote
Big-Bass Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 Aside from my OG Tatula 701ML casting rod, I have the Levante Jerkbait Special (newer version) and I really like that a lot. On the Tatula I have an IP68 and on the Levante I have an SV103H. Quote
