Largies4Life Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 I am currently in the market for a new casting rod that would handle 3/8 oz jigs as that is what I normally throw along with Texas rigs. I am usually throwing casting jigs, swim jigs, and football jigs. I know these all could be split up and have a specific rod for each category, but from my research, I think I will be looking at the MH/F range. Any thoughts on length? I was thinking either like a 7'2" or a 7'6". I am currently looking at the Shimano Exprides in those two lengths, but was wondering if anyone has experience with the Exprides or have an opinion for a better rod for this application? As a FYI, I'm not sure if this will change any opinions, but I am looking to pair it up with my Shimano Chronarch MGL 7:1:1. Quote

anderb54 Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 If you're willing to spend a bit more, the Destroyer FMJ is a fantastic jig rod. Super sensitive with great ergonomics and balance. Mine is paired with a Chronarch MGL and it makes a killer combo. It throws spinnerbaits and chatterbaits very well too. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted January 4, 2019 Super User Posted January 4, 2019 Could consider the ALX Zolo Toadface. A MH frog rod that is also highly recommend for jigs, bladed jigs, etc. 1 Quote

Largies4Life Posted January 7, 2019 Author Posted January 7, 2019 What length of rod do you guys prefer for jig fishing? I've heard people say that a longer rod is better for jig fishing so I'm wondering if I should go with a longer rod like 7'6" or stay in the 7'-7'3" range? I am 6'3" if that makes any difference. For the 734 (micro guides) it's showing Jan. 5 for being back in stock. So they may have them now and just didn't update the page. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 7, 2019 Super User Posted January 7, 2019 Rod length is a personal choice, mine are 6'10" and long enough to cast a jig over 50 yards, caught all my bass on jigs with the past 35 years. Folks think longer rods are needed for better hook sets and depends on your hook set technique. TW honors sale price on back orders. Tom 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted January 7, 2019 Posted January 7, 2019 Nothing fancy here for jigs. Mine go on a 7' MH fast tip BPS Carbonlite with 15lb Invizx on a Curado 200IHG. I like my jigs to stay with in 20-30 yds of me. 1 Quote

Not to say the toadface couldn't set a jig hook, just wouldn't be my choice. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted January 7, 2019 Super User Posted January 7, 2019 I have never handled a Shimano rod, so I'm not much help. But, wanted to mention that after TONS of recommendations for Kistler Helium, I bought one a couple months ago and absolutely love it. I have MH and H jig rods from 6'11 to 7'4" and don't have a length preference in that range. 1 Quote

Agreed, I think after use as a frog rod, Toadface’s softer tip may be best suited for bladed jigs... Quote
