Butt Seat, Chair, Nothing

I normally use a butt seat fishing. Now that I am closing in on 68 years old, I am considering going to a chair. I find myself getting off balance every now and then and if wasn't for the butt seat, I might have went in. I think I fish better standing up, but I think I can adapt to a regular seat. I have a fishing buddy that is 80+ still standing/butt seat so that kind of inspires to keep the butt seat. So how do you fish?

Being 'the spring chicken' that I am,  I do stand quite a bit of the time.

Don't really even like having the seat/post up on the bow - just seems to be in the way. 

That said, I do bring it with me (stored in the port bow compartment) and I have used it a few times.

Especially on super long and particularly sloppy days on the water.

Allows me - a few more casts I guess.

With all of the extra clothes I fish in a regular seat in the late fall and winter.  I use a butt seat in warm weather as long as my bad knees will let me then I put the regular seat back in.

My knees are so bad from arthritis I always use a regular seat. I don't even own a butt seat. I never did stand up to fish from a boat except when I needed to stretch my legs. tander and I are both about the same age. I would ignore these little young snot nosed brats like A-Jay.

I've got a bad back and can only stand for 10 minutes before I have to sit down. A butt seat doesn't provide the back support I need so I use a chair I can do everything I need to do sitting.

I stand 99 percent of the time. If the water gets rough I will get the butt seat out, to keep from falling out of the boat.

Bill Dance has used a chair for as long as I have watched him. he seems to catch plenty of fish.

I have to have something or I’ll lose my balance and be out of the boat. I prefer a butt seat. But I got rear ended in a car wreck a year ago and it hurt my back. I went to a Milleniun seat. It’s good back support.

I have heard good things about the Millennium Seats and actually thought about ordering them. They don't look like much but if it helps me fish longer, I am all for it.

They’re mesh so air circulates a little better in hot weather. I deer hunt some out of a Millenium tree seat so I knew it would be comfortable. My wife always sits fishing. She sat in mine and had to order her one too. There’s a guy on eBay sells them a little cheaper than retail.

I have a seat, but I am up & down depending on the technique.  Dragging a jig or plastic, using a popper or any type of straight moving bait, I will sit.  Skipping docks, using a jerkbait or walking a Spook, I prefer to stand.  However, when standing, I find that as soon as I hook up, I sit down to fight the fish.

also kinda nice about the Milleniums of whichever style...if you look on the sides they have machines holes nice to hang plyers, scale, cutters or whatever to have handy...

@Catt I know you have some back issues, have you seen or tried these. From all I have been reading, they are pretty good for the back.

With my back I can usually stand for 2-3 hours before I have to sit & after sitting 2-3 hours I have to stand.

 

If I'm fishing deep water structure I'll usually sit, if I'm fishing shallow water I standing.

When I first started guiding, my back was giving me fits after a few days straight on the water, an old time guide told me to take the butt seat out.  Took me a while to get used to it but my back problems pretty much went away and after a number of years guiding, I have to think the back muscles used while standing on the deck got a bit stronger.  Your balance will increase and it's just like riding a bike, it will become second nature.  I do use the butt seat on St Clair because that is almost never anywhere near calm enough to stand and if it is I work around the butt seat.  I was told the problem with a butt seat is that it keeps you in the same position no matter which way you are facing and especially if you are on the TM so you over work some muscle groups.  I fish with a young Vet who lost a leg in Iraq and he has a seat that helps him over a long day of fishing, I'll try and find out which it is but he really likes it.  Found it.... on Facebook it's Buttseatbackbrace by Mosher Marine.

I stand unless I'm still fishing for catfish or something like that. I don't like having the seat post in the way and where the post is located in my boat makes running the trolling motor impossible in a butt seat.

It's good to have something to lean on when operating the TM in the wind. I don't like a sit down style seat because it limits my casting performance and can't see into the water as good sitting lower. Balance is very important and if you are having trouble don't risk falling overboard.

I've always used a sit down seat.  I got an adjustable butt seat the middle of last year.  I'm liking it so far.

I use a butt seat to lean against when I'm on the troller for support.  Really helps when the waves pick up.  Usually just stand when I'm not moving though.

We are talking about the front seat, not the back. The front seat angler runs the trolling motor, usually standing on one leg operating the TM with the other foot creating a balancing act. Having a adjustable front post with a butt seat defined as a forward bicycle seat with a concave shape back about 6" high helps to stabilize you like a 3rd leg. I don't sit on the butt seat instead lean against the concave shape back of the seat.

I am 75 years young with major back issues and prefer to operate the front of the boat. When I night fish I change to a sit down folding front seat like I have for the back seat. Can't see in the water at night and make shorter casts, no need to stand up and fish, it's a lot safer.

I have both a butt leaner seat and a standard folding chair.  I use the folding chair if I'm going to be crappie or walleye fishing and I use the leaner taller butt seat when I'm bass or muskie fishing.

 

I always keep a standard folding chair on the back deck.  My Father is older and he tends to sit down more than I do.
