Super User Sam Posted January 2, 2019 Super User Posted January 2, 2019 Just going to brag a little on my Fighting Tigers. You brag on your teams, too. Or go hide under the bed if your team did not perform as you expected. UCF gave it all they had but the stronger and deeper SEC team prevailed even with LSU having to play fourth stringers. If LSU could score touchdowns instead of field goals in the red zone, the Fighting Tigers would have posted at least 55 points. And the no pass interference call on the interception would have been a 14 point turn around for LSU in the first quarter. So I will brag and you can brag. Or complain. Or tell us you went fishing. Whatever. Happy New Year! Fiesta Bowl – LSU vs. University of Central Florida Joe Burrows went across the field to see McKenzie Milton after the game. A real class act. Hope McKenzie has a successful follow up surgery and a strong recovery so he will be ready to entertain us during the 2020 season. Key stat for depleted LSU football defensive unit: win Time of Possession. LSU did so emphatically, holding the ball for 44:31 - its highest TOP in recorded history (since 1978 as everyone in the athletic department went to the French Quarter in years past and they don't remember anything). Cole Tracy, Field Goal Kicker from California via Massachusetts division 3 school: Tiger fans, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. “Y’all” have welcomed me from the beginning. This year has been such an amazing ride! Fiesta Bowl Champions! Great 10 wins for this team and this program! Michael Bonnette, LSU Sports Information Director: Texas winning tonight means that all 3 of LSU football non-conference FBS opponents in 2019 will be coming off 10-win seasons. Utah State 11 wins, Georgia Southern 10 wins and Texas 10 wins. LSU’s next road game? The Texas Longhorns in Austin. Beats Bama playing the Little Sisters of the Poor and Mrs. Butterworth's Cooking School. Ladies . . . “Find someone who looks at you the way Coach Ed Orgeron looks at the Fiesta Bowl trophy.” If it was something to cook he would have had it in the kitchen with some good seasonings. Cole Tracy breaks record: NCAA field goal record and LSU all time record for field goals. . Nick Brossette surpasses 1,000 yards on season. Tracy now has 29 FGs this season -- the most in a single season by an LSU kicker. Kelvin Joseph: I want to apologize to the whole tigers family that I let down in this critical situation I want to let y’all know it won’t happen again 2019 all gas no breaks tough times don’t last forever tough people do. Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit picked UCF to beat LSU in the Fiesta Bowl. I love it when the ESPN talking heads pick against our Fighting Tigers! Especially Coach Corso. Joe Burrow threw 379 passes this season. Only LSU quarterback with more pass attempts was Rohan Davey with 420 in 2001. LSU beats UCF 40-32. Tigers finish the season with a 10-3 record. Burrow passed for 394 yards and 4 touchdowns in the game. Brossette ran for 117 yards. Tracy kicked 4 FGs. UCF lost and was outgained 555-250, but questions in press conference still about it not reaching playoff? "I don't think they could play in the SEC week in and week out," LSU LB Devin White said. UCF did not agree to that 2-1 offer Florida has made for three future games. It would be great to see how future UCF teams do against the SEC or ACC elite. Stanford is the marquee game for next season for the Knights. Will be an interesting matchup. OK, your turn. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted January 2, 2019 Super User Posted January 2, 2019 No dog in the fight....but its been fun to watch and root for UCF. Wish they'd have won. It was a good run. I wish them well. And I wish Scott Frost well...except when the Huskers are playing Wisconsin. Go Badgers. Quote

Will be interesting to see if he moves to a high paying SEC head coaching job once he gets the Huskies back on the winning track. And the LSU fans had a fantastic time playing at Lambeau a few years ago. We did not win as Fournette fumbled on the way to the winning touchdown, but all in all, it was a fantastic trip of the lifetime to play a strong Wisconsin team where the Packers pay. 1 Quote

lo n slo Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 first, i’m a big fan of coach Orgeron and LSU. but to be honest, UCF lost their all-world starting QB near the end of the season. maybe the outcome would have been the same had he played, maybe not. i’ll cut them a little slack. Quote

Seemed Georgia gave up and Missouri was not Missouri. Will be interesting to see the Bama-Clemson game. As for LSU, there is a lot of talk about expanding the college playoffs to 8 teams and allow one of the Group of five conference winners play in the playoffs. With the LSU domination of UCF while using substitutes the conversation will slow down about having the Group of Five teams play for all the marbles. Its just about the money. They would have probably won the game. Expanding the playoff will not solve anything. Alabama and Clemson being in the playoff illustrates that both semi final games were unnecessary as the top 2 teams still prevailed. All it is doing is requiring players to have to play more games and risk injury more. A 4 team playoff is adequate. Someone is always going to get left out and moving to 8 isn't going to solve it. A march madness approach will never work as football is too physical and too quick of turnaround is demanded from teams. The way to solve all this nonsense to make better non-conference match ups and having a good strength of schedule with teams with proven track records. For example, (using Clemson's schedule) Clemson plays Charlotte and Wofford with there already weak ACC schedule. My thinking is to remove the weak opponents and schedule top flight programs like UGA, LSU, Texas A&M, Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, etc to replace those 2 opponents. This goes for every team including Ohio State, Alabama, UGA, Michigan, FSU, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, etc. IMO the 4 best teams this year were Alabama, Clemson, UGA, Ohio State. Records are just one measure of judging a team but is often unfair as UGA had to play Alabama which would likely beat every team so that's not a good measure to use. Certain conferences and divisions within the conference are much tougher than others. We have a flawed system that will never be solved. A great example is that Auburn (an 8-5 team in the SEC West) beat the Pac-12 champion Washington Huskies who played Ohio State in the Rose bowl in a 28-23 game. Yet, Alabama wiped Auburn's face up by more than 30 points. Even a system of football math utilizing algorithms is flawed as different matchups will yield much different results. It's not as simply as suggested by most. UGA did what Alabama did years back in the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma. Just simply a lack of focus and drive to win on UGA. UGA is a much more talented team but Texas wanted it more. Quote

Super User Sam Posted January 3, 2019 Author Super User Posted January 3, 2019 Stephen B, you make some outstanding observations. Here are my three responses to your post: 1. $$$$ The conferences, the NCAA, and the bowl games will take in more money with an 8 team playoff. 2. Smaller schools don't care if they get their brains beat in just as long as they get that check. I know LSU paid one small Group of Five schools $1,000,000 to come to Tiger Stadium for a game. And it is an easy victory to pad their record and have a high national poll ranking. LSU nets around $8 to 9 million a game no matter who the opponent. So from a financial point of view, a patsy is just as good as playing Notre Dame. 3. When the SEC teams lose in bowl games the SEC fans say that their SEC team was playing for nothing while their opponent was playing like they were in the Super Bowl. SEC fans will say that the only post season game that means anything is the National Championship game and if their team is not in it then it is time to party, win or lose. An 8 team playoff will produce a lot more money. And remember, follow the money. SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC 1 Quote
Brad Reid Posted January 3, 2019 Posted January 3, 2019 I like the 4 game series. What it did was force the Big 12 to add a championship game, this year won by Oklahoma as it avenged its earlier regular season loss to Texas. So, was Georgia better than the Sooners? Likely so, though it appears the air went out of their balloon when they were excluded from the top 4. But, we got to see Alabama-Georgia and I think once is enough. They might need to promulgate a rule that says only one team per conference. Alas, #1 and #2 can certainly come from the same conference so I'd likely leave it alone. Sure, #5 Georgia could have won the championship this year; but, for most years, the best team in college football will be found somewhere in the top 4. The odds of excluding a possible winner of the play-offs, yes Georgia could have won it, won't happen often. The way around it is to not lose 2 regular season games. Tough to do in the SEC. 8 teams and another round of games is too many. Hoping, here, they stay with 4. I'm not even certain how they could fit it all in with semester lengths being what they are. Students, first, I'd like to think. The NFL? I bet it wishes it could buy a "bottle" of the football played at the highest levels in college, get that sort of excitement. Alas, there aren't 10 games a year in the NFL that are of the excitement caliber of high quality NCAA football games played each and every weekend. Brad 1 Quote

How else do you suggest “judging” the teams to determine the best four - by reading the recruiting rankings and listening to Finebaum? 1 Quote
Stephen B Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 I know what you mean but it's not as simple as just records. Notice that I said are just one measure and that I said often unfair meaning on occasion, not everytime. That's why I said there's no way to do it as every way has an inevitable flaw in ranking teams. Are you suggesting we should allow UCF and Notre Dame in the playoff since they were undefeated? Absolutely not. A record based approach is also flawed as I have illustrated above in Auburn, an 8-5 SEC West team beating the PAC 12 Champ who went to the Rose Bowl and played Ohio State close. What if 2 team are within one conference such as last year with UGA and Alabama? Are you saying an undefeated team is better since they didn't lose but didn't play any competition? We must understand that certain conferences and divisions and also team schedules are tougher and not use records as the ONLY source of information but also strength of schedule, the eye test such as if Alabama beats every opponent by X amount of points, etc. The only way to solve it is to play more out of conference games against legitimate opponents this will allow for the ranking system to have more correlations across conference to better rank teams and rank the strength of each conference. I could argue that many teams in the SEC West: Auburn, Alabama, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, and LSU have the potential to be undefeated in the PAC 12 conference, so unfortunately it's just the system we have to deal with. I have never mentioned Finebaum. Just some food for thought. Hopefully the NCAA will see the fans views such as ours hahaha. Roll Tide and go SEC! Quote

Super User Sam Posted January 4, 2019 Author Super User Posted January 4, 2019 Interesting points of view and all are valid. Will be interesting to see what happens to the playoffs in the near future. And now to targeting. The rule has to change. Too many refs have their own interpretation and some are way off base. For the moment, we all can sit back and watch Alabama knock off Clemson. Then the fans can start to call the sports talk shows to politic for more playoff teams and rules changes. Of course, any changes will have to be supported by the school presidents and athletic directors. Just follow the money. Should be fun. Quote
