I have been trying to put together a rod/reel combo that would be dedicated to square bills, 1/2 oz lipless cranks with probably a 3XD as the largest/deepest diving crankbait I'd throw on it. Going to pair it up with a 6:3 Daiwa Fuego CT with 12lb Seaguar Invizx fluoro. POSSIBLY 40lb Sufix 832 braid.

I thought I knew what I wanted and was just trying to narrow down the details of the specific rod but now my budget has increased a bit and I have a few more options. For the rod I want to stay around $125 or so. I'm now looking at either the Dobyn's CL 705CB or FR 705CB OR one of the St. Croix MOJO rods.

Read a lot about how a rod dealing only with treble hooks I should go with glass rod had a nice that parabolic bend to it and the thought process certainly makes sense. Sounds like a lot of people are not fans of glass rods, mostly due to increased weight and less sensitivity. I do not think the weight is that much different and with reaction baits like this I wouldn't think sensitivity is that big a deal versus landing more fish. Not only that does anyone make a graphite rod with a moderate action that has that parabolic bend to it or is that only a characteristic of glass rods?

Looks like with the Dobyn's rods the glass models are out of my price range. With the St. Croix they make the MOJO line in glass too. The problem is I would probably have to go with the 6'10" (shorter than I was thinking) or 7'4" (longer than I was thinking) and I am not sure what I would go with. I have a 7' Lews Mach 2 combo already and a 7'6" Lews David Fritts glass crank rod for deeper applications. But for what I am wanting to throw on this rod (square bills, 1/2 oz lipless cranks and 3XD as the deepest diving) would 6'10" not be that bad an idea?

Or should I do a graphite? Looks like ALL graphite rods are a "fast" and probably not best for this task.

Thoughts or ideas?

The “need” for glass with trebles is becoming outdated. Composite/graphite rods designed for cranks are nearly equivalent these days and are lighter.

The graphite Dobyns 705CB is a great choice. American Legacy Fishing has them 20% off right now. Can be had for $87.99. I don’t think you will find a rod BETTER (maybe equivalent) but probably not better for $125.

The fast tip on the Dobyns is actually great because it gives you good feedback ticking rocks and grass but it still loads up really nice on fish.

I was about to recommend this rod too, Dobyns rods are fantastic and the Furies pair really well with the fuego. You can get an additional 15% off if you sign up for their newsletter. I think you'll be very happy with that rod.

For your price range go with the Dobyns Fury 705CB, it’s a ModFast designed for the types of cranks you’re looking to throw, should have enough give for some forgiveness with trebles, but enough power for ripping lipless out of grass and pulling square bills around wood. For those lures I do not like a really moderate crankbait rod.

Can’t find 20% off.  Is there a code?

In your price range, probably are mostly fast.  There are some in the slightly more expensive Avid line that are graphite.  I have both the AVC70MM and AVC70MHM, and they cover 90% of my cranking needs.

Well not to hijack this thread but because the dobyns rods were brought up with the 20 percent off and the additional code. I just bought 2 from american legacy..Pretty sweet deal.......

Have a look at the st croix glass cranking rods. They get really good reviews and won icast best in show. I know a few guys who have then and say they are amazing.

I recently picked up a St. Croix premier medium/moderate rod for crankbaits and similar. It was within your price range. It has a very nice bend to it, and I can't wait to chunk out some squarebills with it. But idk how it'd handle the larger 3xds, I don't throw round nose crankbaits like that too often, and when I do they are on the smaller scale.

Has the sale on the Dobyns Fury 705CB through American Legacy Fishing ended? I thought I read there was an automatic 20% off now (I now see a price of $109) and that you can get an additional 15% off for signing up for signing up for their newsletter (I see 10%) so I asking if I missed the best price possible?

Yes, It was a 48 hour sale. Call them, the worst thing they can say is no, and unless it was a factory coop deal, they probably will do it, or you can wait for the next cycle, just don't read anymore....

Well I went against my original thought of getting a glass rod and ended up using a Cabelas gift card I had and got the Dobyns Fury 705CB so many people pointed me towards. Didn't get to handle one before I bought but so many people can't be wrong, right?

I dont think you'll regret it.
