Chughes37 Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 I’m somewhat new to the bigger swimbait industry. I ordered a dobyns 806 and looking to match it up with a reel. I plan on mainly throwing 5-6” bull shads. I have many curado k’s and metanium mgls, I’m assuming they can’t withstand 2+ oz. I’ve tried to see what the recommended weight for the Tranx 200 but haven’t found anything. Thoughts? Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted December 31, 2018 Super User Posted December 31, 2018 I have a Tranx 300 on that rod and seeing your other reels leads me to believe you'd be very pleased with that combo as well. 806 is an excellent glide bait rod, and someday you may find yourself throwing heavier baits than the bull shads (and wanting that 300 size). Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 31, 2018 Global Moderator Posted December 31, 2018 You could throw that size Bull Shad on a K and get by until you decide to throw something bigger. I fish my Bull Shads in that size on a 200B Curado and it works great. 1 Quote
BoatSquirrel Posted December 31, 2018 Posted December 31, 2018 That makes 2 for the Curado 200. Also consider a Tatula 200. I have had excellent results with both. 1 Quote

Dirtyeggroll Posted January 1, 2019 Posted January 1, 2019 I use a Curado K for Bullshads, slammers and and Triple Trouts. Does great. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 1, 2019 Super User Posted January 1, 2019 The heavier swimbaits 2-4 oz isn't going to damage a quality baitcasting reel. The issue is line capacity using Mono or FC over 20 lb test, using braid the smaller size 200 reels are OK. When you upgrade to larger swimbaits between 4-8 oz like 8" Hudds or big glide baits, then 300 to 400 size reels offer more line capacity to cast longer distances Shimano Tranx, Calcutta and Cardiff all are built to handle heavy lures and big fish. I do not like round reels so after a lot of research, I went with the Tatula 200 and Curado 200 for swim/glides. They have both been great for me in a year of regular fishing. Quote

Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 2, 2019 Super User Posted January 2, 2019 I've been casting heavy swimbaits for about 3 decades now with my Ambassadeur 6500C. Using 25# test mono to throw 2 - 4 oz. baits on a musky bucktail rod. No problems, no worries. For you folks that do not like "round" reels, I'm curious as to the reasons why? I've fished with a lot of folks that don't use them either - yet, they never seem to be able to do anything with those (much more expensive) rigs, that I cannot do. Just curious is all. 2 Quote

Com'on man ~ Everyone knows those round reels are out dated, don't work and can't catch anything . . . . A-Jay 3 Quote
Big-Bass Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Buy the Morrum 5600C that I have in the classifieds that was tuned by Ian Shields. It is an amazing reel that needs a new spot on a swimbait rod! Quote

I don't understand it either. When I finally found the right deals on a swimbait rod and reel I went with the Abu C4-5600. When it was delivered I was shocked by how small it really was. I haven't had a chance to get on the water with it yet but I don't see the size of it being a issue. I was playing around with it last night and it seems like it's not going to be an issue as far as the palming it goes. I have big hands but don't really do the palming thing anyways. I just hold my rod in the whats more comfortable too me way depending on which combo I'm using. Quote
rangerjockey Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I have the Tranx 300 also. Outstanding reel, Once its mounted on the rod it really doesn't feel much bigger than a Curado 200 1 Quote
22RangerZ520R Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I have (4) Calcutta 400D's for my big bait applications. Quote
