Jcj90 Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 Particularly rapala shadow raps and shadow rap shads. What are you guys using? Would like to keep it around $100. I am a big dobyns Rods fan but never used any of their crankbait rods. Anyone using the fury or colt crankbait rod for these size jerkbaits? Quote
JoeyT Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 I’m not a very tall guy 5’8” so I need a little shorter rod. I use a 6’6” med fast and it works great. Nice soft tip to work the bait but solid back bone to set the hooks home. Works great for those 110 size baits. If I go to a little larger jerk bait the rod is a little too light but for 90% of my jerkbaiting it’s perfect. Quote
GReb Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 You want a rod short enough to control and rip but long enough to give you a nice tip. I use a 6’8” medium extra fast. St croix and Shimano make excellent jerk bait rods. While extra fast they still have enough flex in the back bone. You don’t want a pool cue or noodle. Quote
Lincoln Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 I recently picked up a Powell inferno 6’10” medium moderate fast and paired it up with a 8:1 Tatula ct type r and I’m loving it for jerkbaits, I think it will be excellent for topwaters too Quote
ike8120 Posted December 30, 2018 Posted December 30, 2018 I just bought a Dobyns FR705CB waiting for it to come in. Will be mating it with a Fuego CT 6.3:1. This seemed like a nice setup and price friendly to my budget. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 31, 2018 Super User Posted December 31, 2018 6'6'' Fenwick HMG Med. Fast. It has a soft enough tip to work great for jerkbaits, especially the lighter ones like the Shad Raps. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 31, 2018 Global Moderator Posted December 31, 2018 Ordered a new jerkbait rod yesterday that should be here next week. Excited to give it a try. Quote

I take it you have other Kast King rods or at least have some experience with them ? Quote

I've really been impressed and enjoyed fishing with them. I feel like they fish above their price range and I don't like cork handles so the nice handles are a big plus too. I don't like the hooks keepers being below the reels but I can live with it. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted January 1, 2019 Super User Posted January 1, 2019 I feel like a st croix avid 66mf is hard to beat. I like tip down jerkbait fishing and im tall so you may like a shorter rod. Its the best all around rod for jerkbaits and squarebills around. I have my favorites but others have thiers. Quote
Super User webertime Posted January 1, 2019 Super User Posted January 1, 2019 Jerkbait rods are really personal. I know dudes that love floppy glass rods and catch the heck out of them with them. Other guys love xf rods. ~$100 jb rods. 705 Dobyns 68mxf st croix 66mf st croix 70mlf tatula Are all great options to start with Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 6, 2019 Global Moderator Posted January 6, 2019 Well thanks to the good ol' USPS, I get to wait even longer to try my new jerkbait rod. Quote

Ouch. I hope when my new flipping/pitching rod comes on Monday via UPS it's in better shape. Of course, it'll be mid-May before I can use it - when bass season opens for C&R. Quote

Postal Regs - they're required to deliver damaged goods so that the receiver can start claims processing. It's the rules. Quote

At least with that I have that they acknowledged it was damaged prior to me receiving it so hopefully it makes the claims process easier. I was really hoping to get to test it out this week. 1 Quote
rosshilk Posted January 6, 2019 Posted January 6, 2019 Ike delay 6ft 4. Works great for shorter fellas like myself. Can still cast a mile with the crankbait action. Word of advice if you’re fishing shadow raps. Change hooks or check them often. I’ve bent out several on good fishing days. I don’t like changing hooks though and buy pointers or jackal rerange now.
