Whatever floats your boat. Some people will spend a ridiculous amount on golf clubs.

Personally It does not matter what clubs I use, most of the balls either end up in the rough or water hazard.

Maybe that is why I fish.

The SW in the model number means it's a salt-water reel. I'm thinking this is a very heavy duty reel for marlin, swordfish, etc. Those are usually more expensive, but jeez, that's just insane.

Ya, more deep-sea reels - capacity of 940 yds of 100# braid kind of gives it away for the Shimano. The Diawa's even worse - 1000yds of 150# braid.

 

With auto-retrieve reels now out - how long before they have auto-rods for the 'sport' fishermen...the ones who charter a boat for that one trip so they can say they did it. All they have to do is have their hand on the rod - not even do anything - and they can say they 'caught' this huge fish.

Oh I totally agree!  So many folks are "anglers" because they caught a fish once on a trip where they sat until they were handed a rod that already had a hooked fish on it, was told step by step what to do, had someone land it, unhook it, and filet on board a luxury yacht.

I see offshore boats loaded to the hilt with stellas and and saltigas all of the time.

Take a 42' contender with a crew of doctors and lawyers and such , they fish billfish tournaments with heavy payouts , money is no object and tackle can not fail.

Thats the price of the big Stellas (18000/20000) that are used for blue fin tuna.  A blue fin over 250 lbs will melt almost any other reel.  Diawa and van stahl make comparable reels and they are about the same price.  

 

If you buy a Stella for bass fishing you're crazy...or got money to burn.

When I worked at Cabela's in KC there was a guy that use to come in and buy bigger model Stellas for catfishing the Missouri River. They weren't $1,500 then, but several hundred dollars for a catfish reel was still way overkill. He upgraded to the new model every time it came out too. I guess if you have the money to spend.

Yeah, cause catching one of the dumbest, most prevalent, non fighting thing that swims in fresh water while believing that it's got to be done just so with just the right tackle makes one an "angler"...

I know a guy who just put 2 new diesels in his classic 44' tuna boat.  He like to tuna fish and it's a long way some days from Virginia Beach to the tuna. It's his hobby; he doesn't run charters. It's only money if you're having fun. What's a hundred grand or two to refit your boat to your liking.

 

A big tuna will tear up a cheap reel fast or wear it out in a matter of days.

I tired to sway him to a Thunnus so he'd have a baitfeeder, still way overkill for what he needed but obviously had money burning a hole in his pocket, but the guy was set on buying the most expensive thing he could get.

To many of us 1500 is a good amount of money, but to others it is what you pay for a good bottle of wine.  How many people on just this site do you think have big money invested in boats and haulers, not to mention tackle, gas, oil, hotels, food and a ton of other expenses, just to go out on the water and "have fun."   1500 is a drop in the bucket when you start really looking at what some spend to be a weekend angler.
