DIY Clean/Maint mid 90s Shimanos

Hi All,

 

I have been reading several posts on this forum and the information is fantastic.   I have a bunch of mid-90s Shimano Baitcasters that for the most part work great still but can use some serious TLC.   

 

I have:

2x Green Curados (200)

1x Pearl White Chronarch (silver spool/name plate)

2x Calcutta (200 size)

lightly used Curado Super Free (lighter green)

 

Based on reading, I am interested in giving them a good cleaning and upgrading the drag.  They are all still smooth and the drag works, but they’re just not zipping like they used to.   

 

I would like to learn to do this myself as something to do over the winter.  They’ve been well taken care but never deep cleaned.   

 

I am willing to jump into one and see how it goes as I don’t use a couple of them often.   Advice on places to get parts?   

 

I have some original boxes, schematics, weights, oil, and Shimano drag grease.

Those are some great reels and could last a lifetime.  Congrats.

I cleaned and repaired reels for 10 years, those 3 models of reels you have are all tanks.  If bearings aren't giving you problems just clean, oil and reuse.  I would get new drag washers for your reels.  There are many videos online that go step by step on how to clean them.

 

One thing I always do after a trip is remove my reels from the rods and store them inside the house in Plano XXL 7080 boxes to avoid high/low temperatures in the garage to protect the reels and line.  Another thing is I always loosen the drags all the way to "relieve" the pressure on the drag washer, etc.  Doing that will lengthen the life of your drag system and keep it operating smoothly.

Love my little Curado 100B's.  I had three and finally sold one to a friend who begged me for it every year.  I Pride myself in saying my Curado 100B's are a 10/10 in appearance and I make sure they stay that way.  Always maintained by me over the years.

Thanks for the feedback.  I have a few ‘newer’ reels that I use more frequently (Calcutta DC and Conquest) and I just can’t stand to part with these reels.  They really are in great shape and were my babies (I got most while I was in high school).  They’re still smooth, but I feel they just don’t throw the distance they used too.  

 

I did a fly in to Canada last year and had the Calcuttas with me.  My uncle’s Bass Pro brand reel had the drag give up and I loaned him one.  I think it changed his life - then I told him the reel was 20 years old!  ?  

 

I try to remember to back the drag off whenever I’m done along with the tension cap.   

 

Is there a replacement for the cap or the little copper/brass piece the tension cap?   I feel like it’s smashed for good on one of my Calcutta reels.
