Drop shot philosophy / BLOWN AWAY

will try to keep it short. Went to a party when I met this guy who states he knows 3 of the fisherman I know who are FANTASTIC fisherman who regularly kick ars, but he claims he can regularly beat them all, stating he showed THEM a lot of his technics and thats why their are so good.  When asked what he used for gear as I use super high end stuff (Stella, Certate, Steez, Megabass and so on) he stated $150 med/heavy Bass pro rod. Now that didn't bother me as lots of GREAT fisherman used "regular" middle of the road priced gear, but when I asked him what line he was using for D/S he stated 50# braid straight to the hook.  A first I thought he was joking but he was dead serious. The water in reference is stained but not enough in my opinion to be able to use anything like that.  The reason it shocked me is because I have 3 super high end true finesse drop shot rods (1 NRX, 1 Megabass Addermine & 1 Phenix MBX) all spooled with 10# Suffix 832 braid w/10# floro leader.  I am a big fan of floro leaders (and though the rest of the world was too)   He said he NEVER uses a floro leader except for crystal clear water.  To add to this story, his buddy who is also a top notch fisherman  is ordering an EXTRA HEAVY 6'3" drop shot rod.  

 

Since im fairly new I have always read that drop shot was more of a finesse presentation so how can the 1st fisherman d/s w/50# braid tied directly to hook and the 2nd fisherman be buying a 6'3" XH rod for drop shotting. Did I miss something somewhere ?    I was even thinking of putting a 4th D/S combo together with 6 to 8# for clear open water presentations. 

 

I don't know if I have ever read of a "Pro" drop shoting w/50# braid tied direct or using an XH 6'3" rod. 

 

P.S. In case you state gent number 1 is a BS'er, I saw the photos and he had a gazillion and most were with BIG Bass...... so it appears this guy is for real ??

Any chance it could be "Dock Talk"?  In other words, is it possible the guy you met is indeed an excellent fisherman (as the photos show), but he is just pulling your leg in regards to the specifics of the technique?

I fished with a pro three years ago and he told me that the pros are using braid tied directly to the hook or with a leader in clear water.

 

He said that it does not matter if you tie the braid directly to your hook for a shaky head or drop shot presentation.

 

Go figure.

I've heard of guys "bubba shotting" by using heavier gear to dropshot in thick cover, but if he's claiming he's using tiny #2 hooks and 4" worms and direct tying with 50lb braid I think he's pulling your leg. Even if he wanted to direct tie with braid there's no need to go anywhere close to 50lb braid for traditional dropshotting. You'll bend out most dropshot hooks even with 10lb braid.

I don't dropshot much.......to slow for my tastes.  But when I have I used a baitcaster on a MH/Fast rod with 20 or 30 lb braid..........I caught bass.  Dropshot blasphemy isn't it!

 

I'm probably able to do it because I use a $240 rod though.  Super medium centered type stuff.  LOL

I mean, he can do that stupid crap that will result in less bites and more bent hooks and missed fish, but I'll keep doing it the right way and so will everyone else I imagine. 

 

Pretty much guarantee he is pulling your leg though.

I actually feel bad if I'm asked what I use. If I know the other guy can't afford or think it's crazy to spend a lot for fishing equipment, so i lie and say Ugly sticks??

You can fish a drop shot on a baitcaster with a heavier sinker and heavy line. It works great but I wouldn’t call it finesse. Just toss it around in stained water where you would throw a Texas rig, it gives the fish a different view of a worm they might not have seen that day

The line I don't have much opinion about, but there really isn't much of a hookset when you're dropshotting so I can't see any reason to use anything over a medium-heavy rod unless you're trying to DS in thick cover... in which case there are likely far better presentations to use. Like punching or bouncing a weedless jig for instance. I've DS'd quite a bit, and I prefer spinshot hook setups cause I can tie a weak sacrifice weight line in case of a snag and just snap it off and retrieve the hook.

I DS with 30lb braid on a baitcaster. I wouldnt call it finesse at all, just mainly a way to keep my worm above grass on bottom instead of T-rig.

 

Call it what you want. It works. I fish it.

good point and I totally agree. I too feel sometimes funny mentioning my collection of $400+ rods and $400+ reels especially since I am pretty much a beginner as I don't want those people to immediately associate "Hey this guy has super high end stuff so he must be a super fisherman". 

I do not brag, I buy them because they are awesome to fish with. At the end of the day when SOME have tired wrists, forearms, arms, shoulders and such I do not. You can fish with these combos all day long and REALLY enjoy yourself, plus the fight is always more fun on a true finesse rod.  With that said my 3 most favorite D/S spinning combos are:

 

NRX 842S w/ Daiwa Certate 2510

Megabass Addermine w/ Shimano Stella 3000

Phenix MBX-S (7'6") w/Tatula Serling Silver limited Edition 

 

They all have a distinctive feel to them which makes it fun to switch between each.  One last side note: Even thought the Daiwa Tatula Sterling Silver reel was only $200 bucks compared to the $7-800 Stella or $450 Daiwa Certate.... The Tatula is one awesome reel. If anyone knows of anyone who has another Sterling Silver I would love to buy as a  backup.

That would be great - if it was legal here in MN. We could rig 1 jig or other lure on it...the rest of the attachment points have to be hookless. Plain worms/crayfish or spinners without hooks.

 

From Minnesota's fishing regs.

"The tackle configuration known as the Alabama (Umbrella/Yumbrella) rig as it is commonly promoted is not legal in Minnesota waters."

 

"However, a Alabama (Umbrella/Yumbrella) would be legal if not more than one hook or artificial lure/bait is attached. An angler could place a single bait/lure with a hook on one of the wires and attach hookless spinners or plastic baits to the other wires."

You and I always tell the truth, except I am not sure about you! Never hurts to drag a few TRD's across the trail to divert the hounds. As someone said don't believe dock talk, It's rarely true.
