Moving to Rhode Island

Looks like I’ll be moving to RI next fall. I grew up striper fishing in New England. When I moved to VA a few years ago I sold all my striper gear to buy bass gear. Lol

 

What kind of bass fishing opportunities are around? I mainly fish from a kayak. I’ve been spoiled down here with epic bass fishing only minutes from my house, but I am open minded and willing to put in the work on some new water.

I don't know what it's like now - but back when I lived in West Warwick (between my times in MA and MN), Tiogue Lake, Flat River Reservoir and Stump Pond were all spots I fished and caught bass in. All those are near Coventry - SW of Providence.

Check out nebassin.com there’s a great kayak bass fishing series, I’ve been a part of it for 4 years. Also for upgrades or kayak gear the kayak centre in wickford is awesome.

I can’t help you with RI, but there are a lot of good waters along 195 towards Cape Cod. The Cape is also littered with good waters.

Okay, here's a couple of ponds for you to try.  Stafford pond is in Tiverton.  In addition to largemouth and smallmouth it also has salmon and trout.  It's about ten minutes from my house.  It used to have a reputation of being a good/great fishing pond.  I haven't fished it in a few years, but I rarely see any rigs in the parking lot, which tells me that the current fishing leaves something to be desired.

 

The best pond I could recommend is Sawdy Pond.  It's in Westport but borders on Tiverton so a Rhode Island license will let you fish it.  It has smallmouth and largemouth bass.  The past couple of years the fishing has dropped off.  It's best fished with a kayak, canoe, jon boat, etc.  The place is a rock mine and just getting from the ramp to the pond requires some careful navigation.  Once you  get into the pond, it is ten to twelve feet at the deepest.  Rocks and ledges are plentiful as is vegetation.  

 

There is not a barren spot on the bottom.

If you're that close to the salt, it would almost be a shame to not get a striper setup again. Best of both.

Just Joined - have a lot to add for good RI fishing tips if you're still interested. Been slaughtering fish here the last few months even with the heavy fall coming.

Seemed like it the two years I lived there...you could get everywhere with just a 10-speed bike.
