Smelter96 Posted April 6, 2019 Posted April 6, 2019 Small lake near my house is open! Northwest Wisconsin. Everything else still has ice, albeit thinning quickly. But man, seeing this sure made me smile! 3 Quote

A-Jay It went pretty well. Unfortunately we didn’t launch until shortly after 6 and on our lake the no wake time is 6. We idled around for a while, once we got to the main part of the lake I couldn’t resist I opened it up for a few seconds. I didn’t want to press my luck so it was brief, no big deal I’ll run her good tomorrow. I’ll probably do a lot of idling tomorrow looking at the Helix trying to find fishy spots. I was surprised to see the water temp was 52. I’m a little skeptical on that reading, it is a small very shallow lake so maybe. 2 Quote
superkamikazee Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Finally got the skunk off, and found some fish. The key was finding the warm water, the north and east side of the pond were 55-57 F, and the west side and south side were 50-52 F. I caught the fish in 55 degree+ water, up very shallow 2-3 ft of water. Also, I was originally at another lake, but water temps were only 50 degrees, so I packed up after a few hours, and drove over to this pond. So glad I did, it was incredibly satisfying to catch these fish even though it was nothing big, but no complaints from me lol. So I'm officially on the board for 2019. 2lb Pickerel 1.5lb bass 4 Quote

Surface temp of 52 in the evening of a warm-ish day, on a small shallow lake does seem plausible. At this point I'm just waiting for free time. My schedule is absolutely slammed for the next two weeks. Crossing my fingers that water temps at my usual spots don't get too high too quickly now... Quote

Super User gim Posted April 7, 2019 Super User Posted April 7, 2019 Is this some kind of mean joke? They’re talking a bomb cyclone blizzard in the Midwest this week with up to 2 feet of snow! Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted April 7, 2019 Global Moderator Posted April 7, 2019 We got skunked today. We did a lot of idling seeing what we have down below. I was pretty disappointed with what I found or lack there of. Oh well I’ll hopefully get it figured out this year. 1 Quote

BassinCNY Posted April 8, 2019 Posted April 8, 2019 I checked out Oneida lake today and it looks like another week or so before the ice is gone. Hopefully I'm not being overly optimistic. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 9, 2019 Super User Posted April 9, 2019 I just saw they're calling for snowy mix on Thursday. This puts a serious crimp on fishing and skateboarding. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 9, 2019 Author Super User Posted April 9, 2019 Current detrimental fore cast not with standing, we have had serious meltage (well it's a word now) past few days. A huge percentage of the snow & ice in & around the homestead has been dissipating at an alarming but most desirable rate. With only six days between now and the predicted / hopeful local open water date, time to re-check the gear and make any & all final fine tune adjustments. we all know that's just an excuse to go cast in my yard while I wait . . . . . . Super User NYWayfarer Posted April 9, 2019 Super User Posted April 9, 2019 No snow in the immediate forecast for the northern Capital District of NY. Just rain and or WIND, 14 -20mph winds Friday into Saturday. Sunday might have a window for fishing but I am going to stick to Trout fishing. I know they are biting. Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted April 9, 2019 Global Moderator Posted April 9, 2019 I’ve seen the wintery mix predictions and I’m not too happy about it. It’s 60 here so anything that falls I’d suspect will not stick to the ground/roads. The other night when we first heard of this storm I reminded my wife that last year we had an April snow storm. Sure enough she went through her phone and April 17 last year we got a few inches on the white stuff, then a couple weeks later Summer showed up and I was sweating my arse off chasing turkeys, no real spring. Hopefully that doesn’t repeat this year, because I’m way behind the 8 ball with my brown bass plans. ? Quote

Me, but yours shouldn't be that much worse. You're supposed to get maybe an inch more snow thursday morning than me, and mine will transition to rain faster. But then it is supposed to rain more late thur/early fri for both of us. Quote
