Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 10, 2018 Global Moderator Posted December 10, 2018 So with it being the cold weather months again, what's everyone's favorite shad style crankbaits? The #5 Shad Rap and Glass Rap, #6 Storm Smash Shad, and the impossible to find Duo Shad 62DR are my favorites but with 2 of those 4 getting hard to find I'm looking for other options. Quote
Tizi Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Berkley Bad Shad has worked well for me, in Perch. 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted December 10, 2018 Super User Posted December 10, 2018 The Bagley Balsa Shads are great lure. A bit pricy but worth a look at. Not sure what you mean by finesse shad. The Bagley are one size as far as I’ve been able to buy. I enjoy fishing the Shad style baits, on a typical day of throwing them I fish a wide range of patterns, sizes, manufactures and jointed versions. I love how the jointed versions of the Rapalas will catch fish on a tough bite day. They seem to always make something happen. 12 minutes ago, Tizi said: Berkley Bad Shad has worked well for me, in Perch. I have to agree with that 100% also. The flicker shads is a decent Shad but I find I have to tune them almost all the time when new. Look into some Strike Kings. A bit tough to find. But you should be able to set yourself up with a good amount of quality shads. Quote

Super User Paul Roberts Posted December 10, 2018 Super User Posted December 10, 2018 Can't really help you there. My all time favorite is an old slow-rising, Tom Seward-designed Natural-Ike, that I "bluegill-ized". I only have 2 left! Most of what I have liked, besides the Shad-Rap, aren't made anymore. I've liked the X-Rap Shad (suspending) but... I don't see them out there either now. Got one of those left. I'm sure there are a lot of good flat-sides out there. I'm just not up on it. Still throwing the "old timers", that aren't really... all that old. Quote

They're deeper runners than that one I believe though. Rapala still makes the X rap shad though. 3 hours ago, Munkin said: Have you looked at the Jackal Soul Shad? ItsHardwick Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 I do t know if you’re looking for shallow or deeper. I grabbed a couple strike king lucky shads on Black Friday as an impulse buy. Only fished it once but so far I like it. They run 6-8 feet. Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 10, 2018 Super User Posted December 10, 2018 My favorite small diving crankbait is Megabass X100 in starburst Shad, 3/8 oz. * discontinued and hard to find Most over looked may be the Storm/Rapala Thin Fin 06 Shad 2 1/2" Tom Quote
Big Rick Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 My current favorite finesse crank is the Bagley Rattlin' Honey B. This little jewel is only 1/4 oz and 1-1/2 inches long. I caught some very nice fish on it too. Quote

I may grab a couple then. 48 minutes ago, WRB said: My favorite small diving crankbait is Megabass X100 in standard Shad, 3/8 oz. They were a favorite of mine once upon a time. They too are med runners. Quote

Its funny you mentioned that, yesterday I tied on the only Natural Ike I have left. It is the smaller size than the one in your picture with the bass pattern imprinted on it, circa 1978 or so. I find it effective for about 6 weeks starting in December, our winter as far as the bass are concerned. There are some Natural Ikes available on Ebay, some are priced fairly, others are too high. I keep telling myself to buy a couple before I lose mine... 1 Quote

I've looked on e-bay some but they've been pretty pricey. 11 hours ago, scaleface said: My favorite use to be the Suspending Rebel Shad R .I tried throwing the Shad Raps and it was like casting a potato chip . I actually have one of those, but it's the... stable high speed version designed for trolling. I also have some Cordell shads, some Daiwa's, and some Salmo shads. They remain dry as long as the Ikes are still with me. I tend to pack the Ike's and a couple Shad Raps. Ditto the 1/4oz lipless. Lol... that's what I call the "Shad" style CBs: "Potato Chips" bc, my waters don't have many shad, and bc of the way they can "potato chip" against the wind, if I just throw them up in the air. If I release a touch later, they are more apt to "airfoil". I've also weighted some of my Shad-Raps to slow their rise, which helps a bit in the casting. Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Pretty excited to try this little guy out for redfish in particular as the mullet around here are around this size when you cut their bellies open to check the goods out. 2", 1/6oz, 2-4' diving depth. Does anyone have experience with the Berkley Flicker Shad cranks? I know they're primarily designed for walleye, but do they have the tight wiggle to catch bass this time of year? Quote

My bad on that one. This is the majority of my Crankbait fishing. Just never associated as finesse. But you are correct not only associated with worm and soft plastic fishing. I remove and respool mucho yards of 6# - 8# mono and Fluor over the course of a season. Thanks, good fishing. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted December 12, 2018 Super User Posted December 12, 2018 Yo Zuri Hardcore. Offered in different depths. Great bait. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 Berkley Flicker Shad in #5, #6, and #7. Add a size up front hook and they suspend. They cast much better than a Rapala Shad Rap. Storm Smash shad and Luck-E-Strike Rick Clunn Freak are favs too. Quote
