Where to trade in rods/reels?

I have a lot of rods and reels that I do not use much anymore, and would like to sell them all and buy a few new combos. Does anyone know where I can trade in rods and reels for cash, store credit, etc even if I didn't buy it from that specific place? (Not a return policy.) I get a lot of my rods and reels off TW and eBay, so I don't know what to do. Help!

Bait/Sports shops won't give you more than a few bucks even if they take them. They can't sell them to others because of their business model

 

Craigslist/E-Bay/Pawn Shop/local posting site (The one here is called 'Nextdoor') are your best bets.

And right now they're running a special, 10 to 20% more for trades depending on the value.

Thanks, I just looked at that. Do you think I should put my reels on there or just sell them on eBay? I am definitely putting my rods on there because it is a hassle shipping rods on eBay.

Not sure. I guess it would depend on what you have to sell.

I would sell locally or through the forum before getting ripped off on a trade in.

Rods... Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace (only reason I have a Facebook account)

 

Reels.. same thing, also list them on the flea market of this site.

 

Also, be prepared to take a decent loss.

Craig's list or local Facebook.  Rods cost more than most are worth.  Reels are easy and cheap to ship.  Many here build use them a short while and then move them.

Some mom and pop's will sell them for you, for a percentage. Used to be a shop in Oak Ridge, TN that sold used rods and reels, in addition to new. I sold around 10 rods and was pleased with what I received. I set a minimum price.

 

If you have a shop nearby, that you trust, ask them. Worse they can do is say no.

They aren't going to give you enough money to be worth it especially with the cost of shipping. Sell locally or put on consignment at a local shop if possible.

You can always offer your pre-owner gear for sale here in the BR Fishing Flea Market Forum.

I've bought as well as sold, several items here and the experience has always been positive. 

As for 'getting what they're worth' - used gear's exact sale price is only determined once it's sold.

Once you include shipping charges, especially on rods, there is a decent chance your 'profit' might be a little less than you'd hoped.   But that's just the deal - sellers want more and buyers want to spend less. 

 

 Instead of getting caught up in all that, I prefer to offer 'deals' that capture the very essence of the "Flea Market".

Meaning, I already used this stuff and if I don't sell it and I'm not using it, it just sits there. 

So I like to offer my still totally usable & well maintained gear at a very attractive price ~ I call it stupid cheap. 

Stuff sells, (usually right away) someone gets a good deal and I'm on to the next thing.

If it doesn't sell - I'm asking too much and continue lowering the price until it does. 

I recover some funds & usually have a little fun doing it - otherwise what's the point ?

Selling rods is tricky due to shipping. USPS priority is your best bet as a standard tube costs $15 or so to ship priority. But be aware they use a formula and it’s not exact. I’ve taken the same tube to 3 different USPS offices and received 3 different prices. It all depends on the person doing the measuring. It’s a pain and you’re much better off selling it locally. 

 

Craigslist and FB marketplace are your friend. You will never recoup your investment but it’s better than just having gear laying around taking up space. Fishing gear depreciates quickly

Sorry can't help you. I don't trade or sell any of my used rods or reels. Instead I give them away to people at work I know who have kids.

It's Day 5 of their 12 days of Christmas.

In March each year BPS has a spring classic sale during which you can trade a working rod, or reel towards a like product and cash credit is commensurate with what you pay for the new item.  The more the item costs you more you get and there will be a published scale with a max.  When the Chronarch MGL hit the market during the sale I traded in a BPS ProQualifier (an excellent reel) on a Chronarch and received $50 credit toward the Chronarch.  I have done the same thing on old rods.  The trade in items go to youth fishing programs.
