So there I am, minding my own business at my local Academy when as I usually do, took a quick glance into the Daiwa section they keep behind the glass counter. A little yellow tag caught my eye and I did a double take because I didn’t believe what I was seeing. Upon further investigation....my eyeballs were right and yes....I bought it.

I love shopping at Academy for that reason. Sometimes they take clearance seriously. I've never gotten that lucky though. Lots of times things are marked way down but the price tag doesn't show it. The only way to find out is to scan it.

Very true. I rarely see anything with a yellow sticker behind the glass. Just glad I decided to take a look today

Unless I'm crazy here, the reel you actually got is not what the box says.  Box says it's a Zillion SV 1016 but the pic is of an SV103.

The SV103 is still a heck of a reel and still a bargain for what you paid, but it's not a Zillion SV

Hey Chris, any way I can verify it?

That's an upgrade.  The SV103 is a real Zillion unlike that goofy Tatula thing they call a Zillion nowadays.

Is this something I should look into gents?

Yep, that's 100% an SV103. Excellent score.

Easy check the gear ratio.  The sv-103 never came in a 7.3:1  and the raito on the reel does not match the box.

Hah, that is a great score.  Would love to know how it got in that Zillion SV box.

The same way two left, one 9 and one 8 1/2 Nike get in the same box. High end golf balls is a big problem too...

Nice find. I'd be all over that as I will need another reel for a cranking stick for next year too (almost certainly going with a Tatula SV).

A guy in Dicks once told me that in some stores, they don’t put them on display. Instead, they offer them as a special deal for the people who actually ask the salespeople for help. I never ask them for help. I only learned this because I happened to wind up talking to the guy in the store when I was buying a rod and some lures about two or three years ago. He was nice and actually really knew what he was talking about. He started talking to me because I was the only person in the store and I was taking a long time bending the rods and comparing all the guides and tips on the rod I was buying.

Not academy, but you never know.

I’d be willing to be that, or maybe a slight variation of that, happens at every big box store like DSG and Academy. The dude behind the counter at my local store was useless as all hell and was essentially just filling a spot. He’s tried to talk fishing to me before but when he started trying to tell me to give the A.B.U. Garcia (yes....he spelled out ABU Garcia) I stopped listening.

To be fair it is a Zillion and it has an SV spool.  It would be very easy to look at the "SV103" and recognise it as an Zillion SV had you not known or forgotten about the Tatula based Zillions.  The SV103 is very much the Curado E of Zillions.  It was a Japan made reel derived from the high end TD-Z, the TD Zillion.  The Zillion TWS and Zillion SV TW are the Curado G of Zillions.  Malaysian made reels derived from a lower end platform, the Tatula.  Trickle down vs trickle up.

Makes a lot of sense. I appreciate you breaking it down like that. I just thought of this, as far as warranty/replacement issues....is Daiwa going to honor this mixup by academy should I run into any sort of issue?

That would be a concern, because you don't have a receipt for an SV103. I've never sent a reel in for repairs, so I don't know how strict they are and whether they would actually look real close at your receipt. On the other hand, the odds of it malfunctioning within the 1 year warranty period are pretty low.

I don't know about these reels, but I get the impression they are discontinued? How old are they?

If you don't want that SV103 and don't want to worry about a hassle with Daiwa should something unlikely come up, please send it my way.  I would buy if from you for what you paid.  Thanks and let me know.

Since I already know everything there is to know about fishing, I never listen to anything they say. The only reason I heard anything that guy had to say is because he stayed there talking to me the whole time I was trying to get him to leave.

I think he's putting us on. I've been fishing for 50+ years (bass, panfish, trout) and I'm STILL learning new things.

As a member of the +50 year club myself, I was being facetious.
