maybe 20 or 30 different routes for the commute. But was hard to avoid

I wasn't talking accumulation, yes our averages are less, but I was talking about our reaction when it snows. It snows, we shrug our shoulders and go 'no big deal, it's winter, that's what happens'.

I totally get that, just pointing out the actual stats. Also, that list is for “major cities.” Obviously, there are places that get more snow on more days. It used to make me laugh when our call center in Dallas would close for an inch of snow, and we get an ice storm after a foot of snow, with half the city out of power, and I get docked a sick day to stay home and keep my basement from flooding, lol

Oh I get that. Halloween 1991 we had a 3-day storm that dumped almost 30" of snow on us.

 

Guess who had to drive 20 miles each way all three days of that, in a sedan, because of work?

Growing up in Nebraska, I learned to drive in the snow.....deep snow.  I never had a 4wd growing up.  All rwd cars.  The problem where I live now is that folks are not used to snow and do not adjust their driving when it happens.  Never fails, every year it's like a repeat performance.  I have a standing rule, I take the first couple of snow days off, just to let everyone get the bumper cars mentality out of their system.  When I was teaching my daughter how to drive (in my jeep Wrangler) I took her out to snowy parking lots and had her perform maneuvers in both 4wd and 2wd to show the differences.  Well, last weekend in the snow she was driving my wife's car (all wheel drive Equinox) with my wife out getting groceries and as they were returning home a tree trimming truck with a chipper in tow lost control on the slippery roads spinning in a 360 and the chipper hit the back end of the Equinox spinning it 180.  My daughter was able to regain control (thanks Dad) and the tree service truck went into the ditch flipping the chipper and rolling the truck up on its side, then righting itself.  The bad thing is that the 4 "workers" didn't speak english and after they got the chipper off the truck hitch, took off.  Sheriff did catch them (all were drunk).  Now we get to go through the hassle of working with the tree service....owner doesn't speak very good english either....to get things right.

Hopefully this is a reputable company that has business auto insurance in force. If so, have fun with their adjuster.

 

If they give you the "run around" about their insurance company you may have a problem.

 

If they do not have valid and collectable business auto insurance you have to decide to sue the tree trimming company for the damages to your vehicle and the pain and suffering of your wife and daughter and you will find out if they have business auto insurance or not real fast.

 

Even if they have an auto insurance ID in the vehicle, no guarantee they paid the premium and there is coverage in force.

 

If they have business auto insurance you can make a claim, including all medical bills and physical therapy at their undiscounted provider level pricing.

 

If the company does not have business auto insurance there is nothing you can do other than make an Uninsured Motorist claim against your own personal auto policy and use any Medical Payments limits for any medical bills.

 

Could have been much worse and I am glad that your wife and daughter came out of the accident without any major injuries.

 

Keep us posted. This could happen to any of us at any time. Let's hope this tree trimming company has its business auto insurance in place and all goes well with your claim.

I'm gonna call my Insurance Agent once we get the Police Report.  When my wife called the owner of the tree service and told him his crew just hit them, he couldn't speak any English either.............The fact that it was a hit and run and a DUI will pretty much seal their fate.

Glad everyone's OK.  

Why are you working for your insurance company ? - You pay them to handle this.

Get an estimate, send it to your insurance company & have the vehicle repaired.  

Additionally, if it's part of your policy, get a rental.

Dealing with anything else is what all those years of paying them is for.

There also aren't steep hills or curves in Nebraska. My buddy from Michigan won't drive in snow down here, he said a road with several switch backs coming down a mountain in the ice is bad no matter where you are from. Unfortunately that describes every road around here, even interstate 40 and 75

If they have no insurance at all I think you might soon be the owner of a tree trimming company! I guess it'll give you something to do with your approaching retirement. ?

Uninsured Motorist will not count against you as would a collision claim.

 

And I believe there is a no deductible if you know who hit you and a $200 deductible if you don't.

 

I would surmise the company owner has minimum Virginia statutory auto limits.

 

it is a shame you may have to get an attorney or you will have to go to court to get an summary judgement. Either way, it is money out of your pocket.

Hey now !!  Don't stereotype.  There are a lot of "hills" where I grew up in Omaha.  1 block over from my childhood home were some of the best sledding hills in the city.  Actually, Omaha is very hilly aside from the perception that Nebraska is flat as a pancake.  No mountain roads but plenty of big hills.

And the LSU fans that go to the College World Series each year have no problem driving in Omaha so the hills must not be a problem. And Louisiana is not only flat but it is under the water table.

I actually typed no hills initially but I remembered my buddies just went hunting out there and I saw some rolling hills in the pics so I amended my statement to "no steep hills" haha. I also had a professor in college that always hunted the sand hills
