I did a post a while back about cranking rods, finally went with the IMX Pro 845c. Now looking for a reel to go with it, daiwa or shimano fanboy, kinda looking now at either a used antares, a metanium MGL, a bantam mgl or daiwa steezs. Any experience on this topic and ideas on what would balance the rod best? WRB talked in my older post about IPT on 100 sized reels, I would like to take this into consideration. what to do?

Sincerly,

I see you don't have much help so I'll try.I am a Shimano reel guy, I have over 80 of them dating back from 1975. I  see that is a M/H rod. It depends on what depth you intend to fish. the deeper you go the lower gear ratio I would use. Not knowing what depth you are planning to use the set up for I'll use a 10 to 15 ft for a guess. So for a reel I would use a Antares AR, It has a 5.8 :1 gear ratio, I own 5 of them & they are a excellent reel. For something shallower I would go with a 6.2:1 ratio & for much deeper than 15 ft. depending on how much I would go to a Curado CU 200-5( 5.1:1) & over 20 ft. I would look for a older Curado CU 200 B-38(3.8:1) Those older Curado's are bullet proof & can be found on e-bay. Choose the reel of your choice but remember the depth vs gear ratio.  I know some people like higher speed reels for crank baits But what I have said has been working for me since the early 1970's. Good Luck with your decision.

Scbassin thanks for the reply! Reallly lost here! The 10-15fr. Is really what I will be primarly throwing so that guess is a very good one! I saw the shimano antares 12 in normal gear comes in a 5.6 so that should be a pretty good reel for the application! Always scary to see how the rod balances out tho...

Thanks again!

Ive had curados in the past, great reels. But i did the stupid thing and got a few really nice reels like metaniums and antares, and now I dont enjoy my curados as much...

That Shimano Antares at 5.6:1 should work just fine & I would go even somewhat deeper maybe as far as 20ft. Just see if you get tired while cranking.

You need a reel that takes up about 20" per handle turn. Find one in that range and you will be okay for crank baits.

Are you looking at low profile reels only?

Deep diving crankbaits running depth is usually about 20%-25% less then advertised when casting and retreiving. Example Norman DD22 runs about 16', DD14 about 11' on a 35-40 yard cast.

Yes only low profile, I'm not a fan of round reels, I can not feel comfortable palming a round reel. Conquests as an example look amazing and are great reels but not great with me.

Thanks!

You can get a JDM Bantam Mgl pg from japan. It has a 5.5 gear ratio.

I sure have been thinking of that one! I handled the US model in store here and was extremely impressed by how small the thing is!

Shimano Tranx 300/301 5:8-1 would be my choice for deep divers and swimbaits.
