Alec McMillan Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 I am looking for a jig rod over 7 feet preferably fast action with a lot of backbone. I have been looking at the Cabelas Tournament ZX casting rod. I have never used Cabela's house brand rods/reels, so i don't know what to expect. I have heard great things about this rod, my friends use them and love them. I have been comparing them to the Lews Custom Speed Stick 7'3 heavy, which is another rod I have been looking at. The only thing I am concerned about -- my friends who use ZX rods rely on Cabela's lifetime warranty. Since Bass Pro bought them they don't have lifetime warranty anymore. This is my only concern that they are not extremely durable (my buddy has broken 4 of them and gotten new ones with the warranty). Let me know your opinion on this rod! Quote

Replacing the same rod four times is the reason that lifetime warranty went bye bye. Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted November 28, 2018 Super User Posted November 28, 2018 I've got three of them. Two have been used regularly. If you don't break it within the first couple trips, there should be no reason to need a lifetime warranty, because anything that happens after that was likely because of something done while in your possession. Good for Cabela's. Just buy the rod and go fishing. They seem like good sticks for the money. 2 Quote
MrFrost Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 I have a couple and really like them. 7'3'' H/F and 7'1'' M/F. Quote

I only ever had one Cabelas rod, but it was a Tournament Trail. My tongue in cheek reply didn't say that there are 55 brands of rods just at TW alone; and I'd likely never buy a rod that I thought would be a problem, no matter what the good folks here tell me. Faith in warranties can be a distraction....as @Team9ninesaid, true defects will appear quickly and long rod warranties can be overrated 1 Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 The ZX Rods are light, balance well and pretty sensitive. A goood bang for the buck when they are on sale. As stated above, if it doesn’t have problems in the first couple outings then it’s probably not defective and any issues are likely user error. If it breaks down before that the you can probably replace it with receipt <90 days. Quote
Big Rick Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 There are a ton of options in your price range that have MUCH better track records. I bought Lew combo's for my boys with Speed Sticks as the rod. They haul them around in pickups and cars with NO problems or breakage. Lew's makes a great entry point rod, IMO. Quote
