hahmmo Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Hi members~ I understand power rating differs a lot among different brands, but there must be a reference point of some sort.. I read things like fenwick hmg medium is actually medium/heavy, or daiwa aird medium heavy is actually medium etc... Its pretty confusing when shopping online, without having large tackle store nearby to see in person.. Which brand rods do you feel has the most accurate claimed power rating and actual power? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 27, 2018 Global Moderator Posted November 27, 2018 Every company has certain rods or models that run lighter or heavier than what we feel like they should be rated. I suggest going off of the line ratings to get a better idea of what the power of the rod will be. 2 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted November 27, 2018 Super User Posted November 27, 2018 I agree. The different rod manufacturers all have different actions related to the "standard". What they do is get you in the ball park and from there the differences are more manufacturer specific. If you read up on a specific rod you will eventually find it compared to something you have experience with. Or....you just get in the ball park and go from there. Keep in mind that what may be one action to you may not be the same action for me due to the way I fish so what I say may not relate to you. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted November 27, 2018 Super User Posted November 27, 2018 I feel like the Loomis MBR rods are generally close to their listed lure weight range. They have soft tips that make them seem lighter then they are, but after a year or two of fishing a few of them I have found that they can cast their full range. It does seem like a Loomis 3 Power/MH is a bit lighter than most other manufactures' "Medium Heavy", but that is what I uses as my "standard". 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 27, 2018 Super User Posted November 27, 2018 This is the exact reason I put a reel on the rod, string it up, tie on the lure I plan on using! 1 Quote
hahmmo Posted November 28, 2018 Author Posted November 28, 2018 Appreciate everyone’s input! I will have to try loomis to have a feel for true medium heavy! Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 28, 2018 Super User Posted November 28, 2018 Every rod maker believes their power and action ratings are accurate, no standard exist. Tom 1 1 Quote
