My rod is a 6’10 Medium-heavy rated at 1/4-3/4 is it ok if I throw a 1/2oz crankbait?

Because 1/2 oz is between 1/4 and 3/4, it should be just fine. If the bait was less than 1/4 oz or more than 3/4 oz it wouldn’t cast as well.

Yes it is. Your rod is rated for baits that are heavier than 1/4 oz or weigh less than 3/4 oz.

That is the optimal weight range for your rod, as light as 1/4oz or as heavy as 3/4oz. Since 1/2oz is smack dab in the middle of those weights, that rod will be perfect.

How I've always looked at it, just don't exceed the top number as it may be too much for the rod. If you go below the bottom number, you should be straight, just won't load up as well.

The only thing I will mention which I don't think anyone else did, is with a trailer, the 1/2oz chatterbait will likely be closer to 3/4oz, so it won't be as perfect as throwing a 3/8oz chatterbait. Regardless, it should still cast acceptably and be safe for the rod so I wouldn't worry too much about it. 1/2oz itself should be the optimal weight to throw on that rod.

He said he wants to use a crankbait, not a chatterbait.

My squarebill rod is rated almost exactly like your rod 1/8 ounce 3/4 ounce I throw half ounce square bills all day long.

 Do you mind me asking what exact rod you’re talking about?

You can go over the rated lure weight on rods.  Start gently and work your cast velocity/rod loading up.  It will be pretty obvious when you approach overstressing the rod.  When you start forward on your cast, the lure won't start forward instantly-there will be significant delay.  But your original question was answered quite well above.

Those ratings are like the pound test ratings on braid. I don’t trust any rod rating. I have rods (Daiwa & Shimano) that cast around 2 to 2 1/2 times their claimed weight perfectly and are too heavy for what they claim. There are lots of rods that are way heavier than their ratings.

And use the same formula for your line test. Take the high and low line test parameters and divide by two to get the optimum line test to throw with your optimum bait size.

Yes you should be ok casting a 1/2 ounce crankbait on the rod you mentioned. Avoid high sticking a rod when fighting a fish and avoid exaggerated hooksets which are known causes of breaking a rod.
