My go to bait is the jigging spoon in fall and winter.  I even found a 24' hole in FL one winter and jigged up a bunch of trout and whiting with the spoon.

My top cold water lures are a Jerk Bait (Suspending), Shad Rap SR-6 (Tight action), and Damiki Blade Tail Spinner (Cast Far jerk and flutter presentation) for Largemouth.  These baits really allow me to work the water column.  Concentrating on long points with deep water access close by,  here is an example of a point for winter fishing in my home lake.

Catt's probably right, but I admit to using silver buddies now through spring...and then not again until the next November

No joke . Crappie lures work great in cold water . A yellow marabou crappie jig  is one of my favorites .

My buddy caught an 8 pounder trolling jigs for crappie.

It depends on the condition. If they are suspended I try a spinnerbait. If that doesn't work I try a jerkbait, then dropshot or a blade bait. If they are cruising the banks I try tubes, compact jigs and ned rigs. The fun part is trying to figure them out that day.

I caught this on a tube off of a steep bank in 30 foot of water. The water temp was 46 degrees.

*How about water in the 50's F. ? ... What would be your lure choices from say  50° - 59° F. - would that change what you would select ?

My favorite winter baits for water under 50 degrees are : 1) Suspending jerkbaits (pointers, bomber 14 ap, husky jerks, and Rogues),  2) Jigs, esp.when it gets below 35 degrees, 3) #5 & #7 Shad Raps,  4) Sixth Sense flat X75, and 5) wacky rigged Senkos unweighted.

***For smallmouth I also love craw-colored rat-l-traps bounced off a deep rocky bottom.

In water between 50-60 degrees, I fish in spring and fall mode. I use almost everything except topwater baits. Regular crankbaits (Bandits, Squarebills, Lipless, etc.) reign supreme. Dropshot and T-rigged worms are good in the pre-spawn time too. If the wind exceeds 10 mph, try a spinnerbait. Later, when the water gets over 60 degrees, it is topwater time.
