Cleaning up my leaves

Hi All,

 I've seen a couple of members reporting snow before all their fall leaf cleaning was done. No snow here yet ( knock on wood) but a weird fall pattern of 3-4 days of rain, followed by only 1-2 days of cold but nice weather has my fall cleaning going " catch as catch can". Of course living out in the woods means tons of leaves anyway. I'd thought I'd share a few pics of my leaves and my leaf removal tool.

 Here's a few of my yard as of today. I've already cleaned it twice this year, but the oaks will keep dropping until we get snow.

Here's my main leaf removal tool. Between that and my leaf blower, my raking is kept to a minimum. Luckily I own enough land I can dump them way out back in the woods

It would take me forever to leaf blow all my leaves far enough into the woods that they wouldn't blow back. With my tractor I can haul them 100 ft. back easy. When you were in the USCG did you ever know a Glenn Fogg? He's the one that told me about the ghosts at the isles of shoals. I often wonder if the spirits of ship wreck victims haunt it, and Boon island.

I also have a 3 bucket Cub Cadet rider that is used in the same leaf collecting fashion - Just not so much after the snow flies . . 

Never did serve with Mr Fogg.

I cleaned up the leaves off of my yard today. Have a 29 year old Cub Cadet rider with twin baggers  on it. The sad part is all of the leaves belong to my neighbors. I only have one tree and it lost its leaves a while back.

Here's my technique for removing leaves.  First, I set the walk behind mower on the 1.5 inch height.  Then I set the lever on Mulch and mow the lawn.  The mower does a great job of mulching the leaves.  Once I've completed mowing the lawn around the house, I move the lever to Bag and it picks up every little piece of the leaves.

 

I may have to dump the bagger on the lawnmower on the compost pile several times, but the lawn is immaculate.  I will repeat the process once or twice before the trees finally shed all their leaves.  In addition to the mower picking up most of the twigs, by having the mower set at the next to the lowest level, the leaves do not get hung up in the grass and the wind blows them into the woods, greatly reducing the time it takes to process the remaining leaves.

Live in the country....surrounded by leaves.  Try to mow em or blow em when we have a sunny cold day and the wind isn't blowing.  Wind always blows the wrong direction....amazing.  Now it's time for gutters....at least on the front. Mama won't let me do the back of the house....kind of fearful!!

jb, i have tons of leaves myself, plus my neighbor has several giant water oaks that shed into my yard as well. sometimes it looks like brown snowflakes and when the wind is from the NE they accumulate on my property quickly. i mulch/bag mostly with the tractor, burn the red oak, white oak and water oak leaves but compost the pecan, maple, wild cherry, and poplar, dumping them on my garden and turning them in with the soil for the winter. like i see in your pic, those big oak leaves bunch up between the front tires and mowing deck and i have to break down and go old school with the blower and rake. it’s always a chore but i look at it like a work out and feel blessed to still be able to do it myself.

This is pretty much my technique as well.

 

I was fortunate enough that the snow we got on Friday, melted off on Saturday. I was able to mulch/mow the lawn until the gas ran out of the mower yesterday.

 

Woke up this morning to 2 inches of snow on the lawn. My face knowing the job got done

i got alot of the back yard done Sunday afternoon (first pass anyway) about an acre i’d say, burnt some limbs, and started an oak leaf pile under the tree swing for the grandkids. i’ll burn those after everything comes down. but we’ve had over 2” of rain since with more to come. everything’s a soppy mess now and i’m just getting started. maybe it will dry out by this weekend, who knows. i want to go fishing sometime too!

I went fishing yesterday as well, didn't catch anything though.

It was a productive day. Fishing, then lunch with my Dad to thank him for his service. Afterwards I mulch/mowed all the leaves in the yard.

 

My neighbor across the street was watching me mow probably thinking I was nuts. His lawn is leaf covered with snow on top of it today. Who's crazy now?!?

Yup...two or three times a year it's walk around and burn branches or trim and burn branches.  Good exercise and I too am glad I can do it.  It's always good for a nice nap afterwards!!  I keep a small woodpile by the burn pile to have dry wood ready for burning the green or wet stuff.
