Super User ChrisD46 Posted November 10, 2018 Super User Posted November 10, 2018 Like the title states - do you prefer braid or mono as backing line on your baitcasting reels ? ... Thanks in advance ! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted November 10, 2018 Super User Posted November 10, 2018 if i am using braid i put a few wraps of mono or whatever i have laying around on there. For all other line types i don't use backing at all. Quote
CroakHunter Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 Any old mono, fluoro, or copoly is what i use for backing. Quote
Big Rick Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 Braid has a propensity to slip on the spool. So, use some sort of mono/flouro first to lock the line to the spool. Quote
The Bassman Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 Heavy braid over a wrap of electric tape will keep your total spool weight as light as possible. Cheap mono works fine if that's not a concern. Quote
LCG Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 I also use electrical tape and straight braid. Never had an issue. Quote
ratherbfishin1 Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 I use a cheaper mono for backing instead of electrical tape more because I can use less braid which is more costly than cheap mono. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted November 10, 2018 Super User Posted November 10, 2018 I back all my casting reels with 30 or 40lb braid with a bit of etape to hold it too the spool. The braid keeps the spool lighter and serves as "emergency" line if I manage to backlash my mainline to the point of a total cut-off. I can still salvage some of it for a leader and finish out the day fishing my backing. 2 Quote
kenmitch Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 I use kastking braid as a backer for my braid of choice which is Sufix. Bought the kastking and didn't like it is why. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 10, 2018 Global Moderator Posted November 10, 2018 I use mono or copolymer backing. I just save those spools that don't have enough to spool another reel to use for backing or leaders. Quote

As A-Mart uses (when he is not drop shotting ): " On a baitcasting reel I first put on several wraps of mono followed by cheap or used braid which I fill up 50% then finish with what ever final top coat of line I plan on using for that reel" ... Apparently braid is lighter than mono thus gets the baitcasting reel spinning sooner than with all FC , Co-Poly or Mono line . Quote
LionHeart Posted November 11, 2018 Posted November 11, 2018 Cheapest mono or flouro I can find. $8 For 900 yards is what I paid for my backing. Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 11, 2018 Super User Posted November 11, 2018 Bait casting reels usually have holes to lighten the spool weight, use those holes to tie on your line. If you paid extra money for a high performance light weight baitcasting reel spool then use braid as backing because it weighs less then mono. Tom 2 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted November 11, 2018 Posted November 11, 2018 10lb mono backing on every reel I own held on with a tiny strip of white duct tape colored red with a sharpie. Sure saves on fishing line. Quote
