Long time lurker and first time poster. Could use some advice. I have a helix 9 SI at the console and a terrova with us2 at the bow. I’m thinking of getting a helix 5 for the bow to use the us2 without chirp or SI, but I thought I read I could read the SI from the console transducer on the bow unit?

So I guess I would use us2 for helix 5 up front to read sonar, depth and water temp but be able to view SI as well?  If so, does the helix 5 come with networking or just 7 and up?  What parts/cables/adapters will I need to buy?

I think you would need to go with the Helix 7 Gen2 for the smallest unit that can be networked. You would need the ethernet hub and 2 cables of whatever lengths you see fit. The hub needs its own power supply.

If I just network the 2 units and not the trolling motor, I believe I can skip the network hub and save $200, no?

You are correct

You can go 5 on the gen3.  Prices are about to drop in the G2 more than the $300 they are down now which would keep you in a 7 but for cheap.

I have 2 helx 7 G2's they are not networkable. you have to get the G2N.

Yes, needs to be G2N, not just G2.  The smallest unit available in the G2N models in the helix 7G2N chirp/gps.  These can be had for a little bit over $500.

the two units can be networked together via Ethernet, and since you’re not talking about ipilot link with the trolling motor one Ethernet cord between the two units is all that you would need.  You will also need the adapter “dongle” cables as the Ethernet cords do not plug directly into the back of the helix units.  To use the US2 on the trolling motor you will also need a US2 adapter.

So thats

-Helix 7 G2N -$550

-15’ Ethernet cable -$50

-(2x) Ethernet adapter -$30 (each)

-US2 sonar adapter - $30

Looking at around $700 plus or minus for everything.  That’s not including a mapping chip for the helix 7 up front, the units can share waypoints and sonar, but not mapping chips.  A mapping chip is going to run another $100-$150.

what can I look for that will identify if a unit is network capable?  What does the port look like?

A local guy guy is selling a helix 7 gen 2 and he says it’s a g2n but don’t trust him. It only has view, menu, exit buttons and the bigger control button.
