Like the windows on the side, I have used the covers instead of the caps because the blind spots are already big enough on the last 2 trucks I have had.

To each his own. I'm a fan of truck caps, have owned ARE and currently have a Leer. I have a handyman business and carry my tools in the bed. The slope of this new design takes away space that I can use to transport materials; I like the more "squared off" version of traditional caps.

Personally, I use a tonneau because a cap limits the height of anything taller than the cap itself.  I used to have an Undercover for my old truck.  It was a solid 1 piece plastic unit that I could remove if I needed to haul a large item.  On my new truck I have a quad fold aluminum that has 4 sections that fold from back to front or the single panel next to the cab can fold back 1 section.  It locks on both ends.  The new style shown above makes that truck look like a SUV.

I use a camper for work truck and open bed for my personal truck. I like how easy it is to see blind spots without the camper but it would be nice to use a truck with camper as a tent. My buddy that bird hunts all over the country does that with an ARE top and he has had it for at least a decade.

That is the other reason I like the tonneau cover. We have to take our garbage to the dump so I would need a cap I could get the garbage cans under. I have used one that rolls up and they hold up nicely to snow and ice. The only bummer is my Tacoma doesn’t have a lockable bed, that came in later models. 

 

Have to to admit though the SUV look is kind of cool.

It definitely looks cool, but not for me. I prefer either no cover

or a tonneau, which is what my son's Tundra (used to be mine)

came with. Tho that is so old and decrepit we're about to take

it off.

 

Same son told me, when I suggested a cap, "Why, Dad? What's

the point? They make the truck look like an SUV, so why not just

get an SUV?"  

 

He has a point, LOL, though I do understand and appreciate their

use. Too often I haul stuff that wouldn't fit, alas.

Do they even make an SUV that isn't full of electric folding plush leather seats in the back? If I were in the market I'd prefer an SUV over a truck and topper as you can poke long things through the entire cab if you need to, like fishing rods, can sleep in the back if needs be and it would be more versatile. Paying for deluxe rug rat transportation devices, which are going to be folded flat all it's life seems like a bad idea.

However, I really do prefer a buffer between whatever is in the bed of the truck and me as the driver.

I actually tried the 'SUV' thing - went with a Yukon Denali XL - Super sweet rig - but with four 100lb Malamutes in the same space as me - the dog hair and especially the gas  . . . . was Brutal ! 

Traded that thing in and have never looked back  . . . .

Gassy Malamutes, eh? A barrier is definitely a good thing.

 

For us it's wet dogs. When my wife and I drive to a local trail for 

a lovely walk with the pups, there is always water.... When we get

back to the parking lot, dread, as we have no barrier in our little

RAV 4. Oi vey.

Not that I have found.  I don't really want a truck, but need a AWD vehicle for where I live.  I want something long enough to fit an 8' rod, but low enough to make loading a kayak in the wind easy.  I have an old RAV-4 that is about to hit 200k and I cannot find a single current production vehicle that I have any interest in.  I keep hoping that I stumble across a garage-kept '02 Outback with no miles on it, but I am not feeling good about the odds on that.

What do they call the Takoma that's an SUV rather than a pick up? That is about the closest thing I've seen, Though a lot smaller and less capable than a full sized pick up/SUV. I like those Outbacks, they go surprisingly well in the mud, a bit low down though.

The 4Runner maybe?  They are far taller then I want.  My wife has a '17 Forrester and it is way taller and bigger than her old '04 one was as well.  I am not at all into this trend where it seems like all non-compact vehicles are getting bigger. The new Outbacks are looking like the best option but I still want longer and lower.
