Super User Boomstick Posted November 8, 2018 Super User Posted November 8, 2018 Does anybody have any experience with the Pflueger Patriarch casting reel? I'm going to need a reel for a topwater/jerkbait rod and I got my youngest son a Supreme XT on sale last year and have been quite impressed. From my understanding, the Patriarch has extra braking so it should be good for these lighter lures. Does anyone have any experience with this reel, and is it worth it over say a Supreme XT? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 8, 2018 Super User Posted November 8, 2018 Not with the Patriarch, but with the older blue Patriarch XT. Now have 3 of them. The first one has been to Florida with me a few times. Spooled with 40# braid. Primary use has been unweighted 10" ribbontail worms with 3/0 to 5/0 EWG hooks thrown into the slop. One internal brake on. Three on the external brake. Run this reel with the lowest brake settings of any of my reels. No experience with the Supreme XT, but I know smalljaw67 liked his first one well enough he went and got a second one. Dan used to tournament fish and has used some pretty expensive reels. I personally feel Pflueger baitcast reels are underrated. 1 Quote

I personally feel Pflueger baitcast reels are underrated. They are definitely underrated! My youngest son has a Supreme XT and my oldest son has a Shimano Curado K and I like the Supreme XT better! It casts further, brakes arguably better (it's close), weighs much less and holds the same amount of line while being $50 retail dollars cheaper! It's also probably the smoothest reel I own. The only thing it doesn't have on my Tatula SV is the Tatula SV (also an option but the Tatula's seem to be better 12+lb line where the Pflueger is made for 8+lb) is better at casting lures below 3/8oz although we do manage to throw some 5/16oz crankbaits on it, which I am hoping the dual braking system on the Patriarch will help with when casting 1/4oz poppers and whatnot. Not many people in the bass fishing world seem to really be familiar with the Pflueger casting reels, I think it's because they don't really advertise them heavily or have major sponsors, but I've been incredibly impressed with the Supreme XT! 1 Quote

Sifuedition Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 Consider a Curado 150 DC. Only about $50 more and it's a DC. If you are looking to cast light lures with overrun protection...seems ideal since you are close to that range anyways. Quote
zell_pop1 Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 The Pfluegers that were good at casting light lures was like 2 generations ago that had spools that held only 100yds of 12 lb test line. Now I think they are just Abu Revos with a different paint job. 1 Quote
Djohn Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 I've owned one for about 3 years now and i'm impressed by it's performance. I find myself reaching for this reel over the many others I own. Quote

Maybe some of them are rebranded Abu Garcia but there is no Abu Garcia branded version of the Patriarch and I'm pretty sure the same is true with the Supreme or higher reels at the very least. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 9, 2018 Super User Posted November 9, 2018 It's not that they are rebranded, it's that they are all under Pure Fishing, and the reels are made by Doyo. You're right, there aren't exact models in Pflueger and Abu flavors. My only experience with recent offerings are from the Abu line. My Revo SX has the dual braking system, though, and it's really good stuff. I haven't done any light bait testing, but that's more about the spool and start up. 2 Quote

I owned a couple of those old Pfluegers as well. One bit the dust. The other is my spare that I leave at my parents lake house. It still casts crankbaits a country mile 1 Quote

The one like greentrout posted was actually a Silstar rebrand from several years ago. Pinnacle Pro Series from an eBay listing. Just different handle knobs. Quote
diehardbassfishing Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 I picked up a Patriarch XT to see what it was like. Great reel! Keep the brake blocks "light". I have 2 engaged, and spool tension also "light" (no lure drop slow stuff. Just keep side play away, and maybe a fraction of a turn more). It casts extremely well. Light and med weight lures. Haven't tried anything I'd call heavy on it, but I'm sure it would perform just fine. My go-to reels are Daiwa Zillion, Tatula, and Ryoga - just for reference. Karl Quote
Bass Junke Posted November 12, 2018 Posted November 12, 2018 I just bought the Patriarch this year. It was my first baitcaster so as far as comparisons I have nothing. I can tell you by mid summer I was casting everything but the lightest weightless plastic. Many people say that 2 braking systems are redundant. I have read that Centrifugal brakes affect the beginning of the cast while the Magnetic brakes affect the end. I believe I have felt and seen that while experimenting with the settings. It is ultra smooth, compact so it fits nicely in your palm, and very light. With the right adjustments, you can cast anything with this reel. Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted November 12, 2018 Super User Posted November 12, 2018 I don't have a Patriarch baitcaster, but I have the supreme, supreme XT, and a patriarch spinning reel. All are excellent. However, before buying a new one at full price, 2 Quote

I gather magnetic braking slows the spool the entire cast where the centrifugal brakes limits the top speed of the spool from my experience. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 12, 2018 Super User Posted November 12, 2018 For mag brakes, it depends on the system. These work through the entire cast. Centrifugal brakes increase as spool speeds increase, so basically at startup. Not all dual braking systems are equal. This one happens work quite well. Quote
