The Bassman Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Had a local reel tech tell me that when servicing spinning reels that it's imperative that gear teeth location be the same as before it was disassembled. I'm looking for some opinion on this. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 This true of some oscillator gear sets but not all and not main/pinion gears. If you get oscillator gears out of sync you'll feel a tick or tight spot at the top or bottom of the stroke. Quote

This guy (who's well known and is very good) insists that wear patterns develop on main and pinion gears. Wouldn't mesh locations change constantly anyways? Quote

The gears aren't 1:1 so... All I've got is an opinion same as the other guy and not going to run anyone down. I just can't see this. 1 Quote
PatrickKnight Posted November 2, 2018 Posted November 2, 2018 I wonder if the oscillation gear being slightly off might be the issue with my Daiwa Luvias. It has an annoying tick when reeling under pressure. Quote

Super User MickD Posted November 3, 2018 Super User Posted November 3, 2018 If I think the reel needs to be disassembled, I let a pro do it. Both BC and spin reels these days are way too complex for me to risk screwing them up. I just take the covers off and do what I think necessary there. If I have to go deeper, I send it in. Exc for disassembling spools to service the drag on spin reels; that is not a problem. Quote
