BassFisher22 Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 I would like to start trout and smallmouth fishing with a fly rod. I am not sure what weight rod I should buy so I can fish both smallies and trout. I would like the best quality possible under $150. Would like to keep it around $100 but I am willing to spend up to $150. It can be a combo or an individual rod and reel. If anyone can help me with this that would be great. I don’t know if this the right forum for this subject if not please move it. Thank You Quote
GeekOutdoors Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 I'd say 5 or 6wt if you want one for both smalljaws and trouts. Reel is not that important in flyfishing as it is a line storage. Just take one that doesn't pinch the line on retrieve. A 6wt is a little easier if you are a beginner, less affected by winds... 1 2 Quote
GReb Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Walked into an Orvis the other day and they had several sales going on Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted October 28, 2018 Super User Posted October 28, 2018 Cabela's has some nice fly outfits in that range, and they go on sale during the year making them an even better deal. Spend more on the rod than the reel, and DO NOT skimp on the line(s). BPS also has some nice fly sticks. I like a rod that's not too fast in the 5-6 range for what you are describing. Quote
