The Dread Pirate Fisherman Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 I'm looking to upgrade from a 30lb thrust to a 50-55 lb thrust electric trolling motor and was wondering if anyone has had good/bad experience with the Newport vessels Electric Trolling Motors. Particularly (but not required) the - 55lb Thrust (NV Series)model. Online reviews can be misleading So I'm asking here because I trust BR and it's members to give much more accurate reviews. I'm using it on a old square stern 16ft HDPE canoe because the 30 struggled against the wind gusts and I want to be able to move more than 1-2 mph during those windy days on bigger bodies of water. Arcs&sparks Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 I’m not sure if this is still relevant to the OP, and he hasn’t signed in for a couple weeks. I am a somewhat satisfied customer of a Newport Vessels 86(?)lb thrust 24v tiller trolling motor. The Minn Kota’s of that size get very pricey. I’ve had it a couple years now and it works like it did when I got it. That being said, it has no low gear. Speed 1 is 3.1mph and speed 5(?) is 3.6-on GPS. It literally puts you back in your seat, all or nothing. Hits 4 downwind with only me in it. It’s on a small but heavy electric boat. I had to add my old beat up 55lb Minn Kota back on just to have a low speed on the stern (bow mount up front) totaling 3 motors....... My word of advise is to just buy a Minn Kota or other name brand. Those 12v tillers are pretty reasonably priced and last forever. 2 Quote
kjfishman Posted November 30, 2018 Posted November 30, 2018 The Newport Vessel sells for $199 you can get a Minn Kota Endura Max 55 for $245 online from Walmart. I would get the Minn Kota for $45 more. I have a had Minn Kota that is at least 20 years old and still going strong. I did have to fix the mounting bracket with a $6 dollar part this year. 2 Quote

I thought I had ok'd notifications to my email when people replied but apparently not. In any case your info has helped me decide to not buy a Newport Vessel and go with the Minn kota. That low gear is key when I'm moving up a bank and if it doesn't have one that's reliable it is of no use to me for obvious reasons. Thanks again On 11/29/2018 at 8:40 PM, kjfishman said: The Newport Vessel sells for $199 you can get a Minn Kota Endura Max 55 for $245 online from Walmart. I would get the Minn Kota for $45 more. Spring will not be here soon enough till then it's the river because the ice is still to thin. 1 Quote
