TBAG Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Currently using a 6'8" MH St. Croix Avid, which I love but I've got the itch for a new rod...... I'm a self proclaimed St. Croix and Loomis fanboy but I'm open to other suggestions. I'll be fishing with this rod 90% out of my kayak so would ideally like to stay under or right at 7'1". I'm not opposed to buying used as a lot of my rods I own are gently used that I've gotten for a steal. If buying new I'll buy local or wait until the TW Black Friday sale. I'll more than likely pair the rod with a Curado K or maybe a Curado 70 if I choose one over another K or DC. So, best Jig/TR rod for $300? Go Quote
anderb54 Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 The Orochi XX Perfect Pitch, or if you can find a used Destroyer FMJ for that price, do it. Quote

Rich in Co Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Megabass FMJ probably have to go the used route but they are sweet Quote
LonnieP Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 I’m in the same position and I’m pretty sure I’m getting a Kistler H3. Have heard nothing but great things about them. 1 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted October 28, 2018 Super User Posted October 28, 2018 I like the FMJ and GLX MBR. They are different but love both for that purpose. They can be had for 300 used Quote
Backroad Angler Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 I've been using the Dobyns champion XP DC683SF for jigs/trigs, I absolutley love it great rod and I feel every little thing with it. Quote

scbassin Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Since your fishing out of a kayak you might out a Dobyns Champion XP DC683 C or a DC684 C depending on what weight baits you want it for. I do not own either of these rods for I like full handle grips. I do own 14 Dobyns Rods & find them a excellent plus will save you a few bucks. I suggest you call them & tell them what you fish out of & what you are looking for in a rod & they will suggest a few rods that they have in your price range. 903 919 8028. Then you can ask around. Matt_3479 Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 If it were me I’d probably look at a glx either in the mbr or jwr series. An 843c mbr is suppose to be a wicked stick and the 853 or 854 in the jwr would probably pair up nicely for you as well. kistler is a company I only have 1 rod from, an older rod but it’s great! I’d love to try a new H3 but there hard to find in Canada Quote
PatrickKnight Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 At $300 for me its really hard to look away from Megabass. 1 Quote

They can be had for 300 used I have both as well and would give the nod to the FMJ for bottom contact use. However, old model GLXs can be found for very good prices on eaby, I have built up a nice little kayak arsenal full of old-model IMX and GLX rods for not a ton of money. Quote

kschultz76 Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 You don’t mention what weights you’ll be throwing or to what cover, which for me impacts the decision. I’d be looking at the appropriate power in either: Kistler Helium 3 Loomis GLX MBR Megabass Orochi XX St Croix LTB I own all of them and I like them all, but the Kistler and MB are really tied for my favorites. I love casting with the GLX MBR but it’s reel seat is not as comfortable for pitching as the others. All my MB Orochi are gen 1 models. Quote

Max weight will more than likely be 3/8 jig plus trailer, light to medium cover more than likely.. The Kistler is currently in the lead, wish I could handle one first but don't have any local dealers. Quote

Super User WRB Posted October 30, 2018 Super User Posted October 30, 2018 Why go off the shelf when for $300 you can have a custom rod biult to your exact requirements using nearly any high end rod blank available. Tom 1 Quote
bigfruits Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 spend a little more and get the MB FMJ. Traded my main NRX jig rod for it, glad i did! Quote
Stephen B Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Megabass, St Croix, G Loomis, Dobyns comprise 95% of my rods. Id look into them before I would buy a Kistler. Just a personal thing. Quote
