Hook2Jaw Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 Finally got a dedicated jerkbait setup, suggest me a line, if you would. Once this fizzles down a tad I'll evaluate opinions fully to best present my rips! Thanks in advance! The setup: Daiwa Fuego 6.3:1, 6'7" Medium Fast Rod(banned brand, ***, if anyone has any opinions on the rod please PM me.) I've been jerking with the same geared Fuego with a 7' Medium Heavy Fast Daiwa Aird-X with 12# Berkley Vanish Fluoro, losing maybe 1 in 10 fish. Help me catch number 10! Quote
rv8apilot Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 (edited) I think most people will say 12# or heavier fluorocarbon, but I use 15# braid with about 6 feet of 8# fluoro leader, and it works for me, at least with the mid-range jerk bait like the KVD 300. But then I use the same line with most of my bait casting rigs. I just like the castability and sensitivity of braid. Edited October 25, 2018 by rv8apilot left out type of reel 2 Quote
Super User MickD Posted October 25, 2018 Super User Posted October 25, 2018 Sometimes one just cannot get the sharp jerks/twitches that the bass want with mono or FC. But braid, with its zero stretch, will do it. Even with a leader. The Gore fiber braids sink, as does FC. Better hooks sets, too, IMO. 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted October 25, 2018 Super User Posted October 25, 2018 Right now, I'm running 15lb line but I plan on getting a slightly shorter M/XF rod for jerkbaits and topwater and running 12lb Sufix Siege on it for next year. Quote
anderb54 Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 I use 20 lb braid with either 11 lb Defier Armilo or 10 lb Shooter FC as a leader. I know a lot of guys who aren't too crazy about Vanish, and although high end fluoro is expensive, a spool of Shooter will last me a season to a season and a half. Quote
Chance_Taker4 Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 I use 8# Vicious Ultimate Co-Poly. I enjoy the light line because I like the fight of light line vs just horsing the fish to me. Quote

I don't claim to know what exacly happens at the end of 50' of line when I jerk. But I just don't feel confident in the action unless I'm using braid. The mushy feeling at my fingertips may not be the same at the lure, but I feel much better about things with braid or Gliss plus leader. Quote

The acceleration of the lure is different between braid and mono/FC. Or put it this way, you can do all kinds of jerks with braid, but you cannot get the really quick twitches with mono/FC, especially with a soft tip rod. With northern smb, they sometimes want it really quick. Quote

I love Vanish. Yeah, it's cheap, and yeah, it coils a bit. I've landed my personal best bass on Vanish and with two fights with a pair of foul hooked 25ish pound carp, I have all the faith in the world in Berkley Vanish. The PB was on 17#, and the two carp were drug in on 12#. As for what everyone said, I'm going to try out copolymer and braid to fluoro. I'll figure out which I like from there. Thanks guys! Quote
zeth Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 I use daiwa j braid 20lb to 8-12lb sunline fluoro leader Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted October 27, 2018 Super User Posted October 27, 2018 Have gone back from braid to ten and twelve pound mono. I have felt I was being to sensitive and over reacting. So far it has been good. This winter will tell. Quote
LonnieP Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 I use 12 pound P-line tactical fluorocarbon for jerkbaits Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted October 27, 2018 Super User Posted October 27, 2018 I used to use 6 or 8lb diameter braid but last season i went back to your hybrid in 8lb for spinning rods and 10lb for casting and like the set up much better. The braid seemed to get tangled up on the front hook of my trebles during more aggressive retrieves. I also like to use jerk baits in super cold water and i am not a huge fan of braid in those situations. Quote

Hook2Jaw Posted October 29, 2018 Author Posted October 29, 2018 Went against most suggestions after receiving my jerkbait rod in the mail, was worried about pulling trebles with the XF tip. Went with Berkley Trilene XL monofilament, proceeded to catch quite a few bass on it and took it inshore yesterday. Smoked a 17" seatrout and an 18", but weirdly, on the first cast I caught... A d**n stingray. Second one ever on artificial. Quote
Hulkster Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 I also like 12 pound Sufix Siege as you mentioned. its the best all around mono I have used. Quote
EGbassing Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 Go to your nearest Dick's Sports and get some Seaguar Red Label. It's on sale for around $10 right now at most stores. It's awesome for the price. Quote

Super User MickD Posted October 29, 2018 Super User Posted October 29, 2018 If you want the rig to also serve as a surface outfit, you do not want FC. It sinks and will, not maybe, but will, screw up the action of most surface lures. Exc for the Whopper Plopper, which is basically a lure that can be retrieved with the line out of the water. Quote
