Super User fishwizzard Posted October 24, 2018 Super User Posted October 24, 2018 Last night I lost one of my favorite lures, this mystery tiny popper: I found it snagged in a tree years ago, it's light enough to cast on my trout combo and I have caught quite a few late-season bass on it when I get sick of trout fishing. Last night was no different, the trout were not cooperating and I tied tiny popper on. Five pops in to the first retrieve a nice bass grabs it. I got him to the bank and then, forgetting for a second I was fishing 4lb mono, I grabbed the line to lift his head rather then stick my hand into the water. The line popped and he ran off with my lure. I feel really bad for leaving a lure in him through carelessness. I am also cranky about loosing my tiny popper and would love any help IDing it. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted October 24, 2018 Super User Posted October 24, 2018 Hard to tell with all that nail fungus in the way... Matzuo nano maybe? I would look a the P50 or Cultiva Gobo if you can't figure out what it was and want to replace it. If you know what about it you liked, or what you want it to do, I can mod one to do pretty much whatever you want, but with tiny poppers, usually less is more. That fish will either float up or bite again in a couple of days, so..... Quote
Super User Gundog Posted October 24, 2018 Super User Posted October 24, 2018 Really looks like the Matzou nano. At least the body has the same shape. The hump near the head gives me the idea its a Matzou. The paint job might be a bit difference but that could just be a change in the pattern from one year to the next. Quote
Harold Scoggins Posted October 24, 2018 Posted October 24, 2018 Matzuo Nano Popper Color: Frog Can be ordered from Academy for $4.99. Quote

Boom, that's it! I am going to go buy a half dozen of them! 3 hours ago, reason said: Hard to tell with all that nail fungus in the way... Matzuo nano maybe? That's just throwing money down the drain. 2) I like a lot of things about it. First, it casts very very well for it's size. Second, it stays on top of the water. A lot of small poppers (lookin' at you Pop-X) seem to have a very narrow range of action before they will either skitter across the surface or dive under. This little guy is so easy to make either tiny "pops" or big splashes but it either way, it stays on top. Third, it is really easy to work. I am normally an XF guy for popping/walking lures, but even on a Mod action trout rod it works great. 3)I did go out today, but it was so windy that I fear if it did float up it is now wedged under a floating dock. But, this same pond did return a BBZ Rat to me a few months after I lost it to a snag, so maybe I will get lucky again. 3 Quote

That happened to me one time, it felt like Christmas morning! It was the very first whopper plopper I ever had, a 90 in perch. Snagged it on a stake in a crappie bed and got all like you do when you lose a good lure. Low and behold I was in the same spot like 3 months later and I find it washed up on the shore. Tail had to be taken off and cleaned to make it work again but that was a good feeling. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted October 25, 2018 Author Super User Posted October 25, 2018 So it it looks like the Nano Popper has been changed. The colors are all different and the tail treble is not longer dressed. I found a few old one and bought them and a few new ones to try. I can always dress the hooks myself, but I now worry that they changed how the lure runs as well. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted October 29, 2018 Author Super User Posted October 29, 2018 It came back! Back at the same pond today and there it was floating in a pile of wind-blown debris. The line broke not at the knot, but like a foot up, which gives me a lot less confidence in my 4lb mono. Also, one of the treble points is broken off. The bass only had that one point in him, so I guess he managed to break the point off? 2 Quote

I seldom fish 4 lb test, even for crappie and trout, it's plenty strong enough even for bass, but any little nick will cause a weak spot which will cause lost fish and lures. I have a couple of ml rods with 10/10 braid to mono that work well for a wide range of smallish lures, and holds up well in cover. Quote

Yea, I throw my trout lures on a UL casting combo and was only using the 4lb mono due to cost. I still blow it up often enough that I have to replace the line a few times each winter. I had some 8lb braid left over and am now running that to a 6lb mono leader. The casting distance is great but we shall see if my thumb is up to it. Also all the Nano Poppers that I ordered arrived. There are three distinct "styles" in the dozen or so I bought, I hope some of them run like the Prodigal Popper. Quote

Matzuo (in addition to making some really crappy lures) will change baits around nilliy willy like that. I have one of their discontinued JBs that kills late winter/early spring for me, and I'm down to 2. Pickerel fishing got good this week, and should only get better in the next weeks. Quote

All there are the same "Frog" color. The white package ones seem to be the same shape, I will pop one out and weigh them in a bit. The black packaging ones are totally different, if they work well, great, if they don't, then they are going in the pickerel pile. The website still shows the original color scheme. Quote
